So, today I head up to my place to retrieve the tractor with shredder 'cause the lawn mower ain't "cuttin' it" at home. Didn't take a rifle, so I knew I'd see a group of axis. Sure 'nuff, I did. I don't slow down, just rattle on past and up to the house. A gentleman that recently passed taught me this. I hurry into the house, take off my white t-shirt, throw on a gray one, and grab my dad's .30-30 out of the wardrobe. I put a sneaky-sneaky on them back to where I saw them. Just about when I think they boogied, I see a couple of axis doe. Trouble is, one of them saw me at the same time. I try to crawl closer, but one barks and off they go, back across the field they came from. I stumble to the bottom to see if they'll stop and they don't. About 5, with a couple of young bucks in the mix. I keep thinking that's not enough, so I get up and see if a few hung up when they ran. Sure enough, a couple take off down the drainage and go out around the edge of the field. I stumble back down to see it they'll stop. They do, at about 150. At the shot, this guy jumped straight up and took off around the field, then stopped right at the edge going down to the creek and looked real sick. I tried to hit him again, but must have missed. I went around the edge of the field and saw horns sticking straight up out of the grass and moving a little bit, along with his "askari" standing there looking at him. I managed to get a little closer and managed to put another one in him to end it. Maybe a young one, but maybe one in "decline". Either way, I'll fill the freezer again and this is the first animal I've killed with dad's .30-30 (Marlin 336 with an old Bushnell "Banner" scope I put on it) in 40+ years. 'Thought that was pretty cool. Thanks for looking.

That's a beauty. Any Axis buck is a trophy to me. Good shootin', creek.

Creekrunner, not all trophies have big antlers. The trophy is in the taking, and this one sure sounds like one.
