We have an area of the lease we call "The Swamp" and right now it is just that. Before last season we placed a blind in the swamp and saw quite a few deer there last year. As the swamp starts drying out I would like to throw something out that would take hold and attract more deer to the area.
I can not invest is disks and all the other equipment needed to plant a food plot like many of you do.
What plant would work for this purpose?

Clover if it would not have much grass competition.

I wouldn't invest a lot the 1st go around, swampy areas usually have poor soil, similar to a lake bed, unlike river drainage's and lowlands that often get extra from upstream. It may depend on what you term "swampy area", could be fertile as heck too. A grain rye with some arrow leaf clover may work for you.. You could buy a mixed bag like from http://www.mbsseed.com/, or other regionally grown seed supplier. They have a small grain clover mix iirc at MBS. Vegetation and sunlight may be other limiting factors. In any case, be ready to at least use a rake to increase your seed/soil contact for better germination.
If at first you dont succeed, then skydiving is not for you..

TwinBubba, I used it last season with good success, sufficient/abundant rain is key for the Throw n Grow stuff. Average rainfall to lower than average usually doesn't bring it up much at all. I had consistent 6"+ shooters covering the patch and the animals used it regularly.

As I recall yo can get it at Academy purty cheep. Try a bag you don't have make a big production out of it, as it dries if you can drag a rake though there or just throw the seed out. They say all it needs is soil contact, it won't all grow but so what some will. You never can tell it may give you the bug, remember it's all about having fun and making memories.

Just let me say that this is our 3rd year on the lease and this is the first time the swamp area has held any water for more than a week. But what hasn't held water this year? Thanks for your input. I will also pose the question to my local feed store and see what they may suggest. I really don't want to put a feeder is this area because we already have two feeders on the 100 acres and one is fairly close to the swamp. There is a stock tank 50 yards of so from the swamp and I just wanted to try something else that may keep deer in the area a little longer.

It is mostly tritale(sp), which I believe is a hybrid rye grass, not sure if it has nutritional value or not
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.
