Lot of really good one out there these days in that price range. I would go to a site like Cabelas, Bass Pro, etc and read customer feed back on them all. I have an Excalibur that cost a bit more than that and love it. Not a compound crossbow and like it for that reason.

I've been looking for a good starter crossbow myself without breaking my pocket book. My research has turned up nothing but good things about the PSE Fang. On Amazon & other places $300 gets bow/scope/arrows & extras. Check it out & read reviews.

FWIW...

I like the speed (350 fps) and kinetic energy that the Barnett crossbows offer in the $400-$500 range. I compare them a lot like a Savage rifle, not the best in class but certainly good enough.

I'd look for a used Excalibur. You can find a Phoenix, Ibex or Equinox in that range pretty easily. Heck, the new Matrix Grizzly can be had for ~550 or less.
