Shoulder issues have me looking at putting my bow on the shelf and getting a crossbow. I don't even know how to begin looking/comparing.

Budget is not necessarily and issue, but looking for reliable, safe, accurate etc.

Somebody school me on crossbows please!

Best bet is to go to Cabelas, Bass Pro, or other big store and handle as many as possible. One will probably stand out and then you can research from there. Most of the major brands put out good products, and it basically comes down to what you are comfortable with, and what fits your needs. You may need a crank type cocking device if your back/shoulders are really bad.

I went recurve due to the simplicity. Lots less moving parts to get out of alignment, break, wear out.

Don't get caught up in the speed and noise hoopla. Nearly all the crossbows shoot 300+ fps which is plenty fast, and they all make noise (which the deer don't seem to mind at normal hunting ranges).

If you want a precision crossbow built like a Rolex or Rolls Royce, call Kodabow. Super nice recurve bow. For compounds, Camx is a really nice bow. If you want something different, check out Scorpd.

Bottom line is that we each have different needs and wants. What works for me may not fit you. Have fun in your search and let me know if you find the "perfect" crossbow.

RedSnake, I'm partial to the Barnetts for the speed and KE you get at the cost. For $600 or so you can get a Ghost 350 or Brotherhood that will shoot 350-375 fps with KE of 120-130 lbs. That is flinging it pretty fast and hard. Craftsmanship wise they're not the best out there but they're not bad either. Comparable to Savages with rifles, you can do better but certainly more than good enough.

I got an Excalibur for many reason. One is that it is not a compound but a traditional recurve limb crossbow. You can take the string off or put one on yourself. I like the fact that I can take the string off during the off season to relax the limbs. Mine is very accurate. All crossbows make more noise than a compound bow so you have to allow for that in your shooting distances. You to really read a deers posture and how jumpy he is when you are trying to make a shot. Most crossbows are able to group very tightly out to 50-60 yards. They are a bit more difficult to use in a box blind or tripod at first but once you get used to them it is not much off a problem. I have a Excalibur Equinox Lite Stuff package I bought. I think I paid around $800-900 for it. Has a scope which I really like. Speed with any crossbow is really going to be determined by what string is on the bow, type of arrow and broadhead. By plenty of string wax and rail lube. You will use it.

I bought the Excalibur Matrix 380 two years ago, and it is bad "bootie." I like the fact that I can change the string and be back in the hunt, if need be, in a matter of minutes. Strings are inexpensive compared to a compound CB. If you really want a compound, look at the Mission line, as you do not need a press to change the string/cables.

I will say the Matrix 380 is not your typical "lets go out and shoot a bunch" because it can be a bear to [censored] and shoot if you have a bad shoulder. But, they do make other Matrix bows that are less poundage. If you really want the top of the line compound, Ten Point can't be beat.

Now, as with anything, you get what you pay for at times, and I'm not bashing any one crossbow, but since you mentioned budget doesn't matter, or something to that effect, I threw out the top of the line.

I will say also that all bows, no matter what they are, will make noise, but I was really surprised that my Matrix 380 was quite.

Another vote for the Matrix 380. All taken with my 380 in the last 7 months:

I ended up going with the kodabow Zulu Scout. Like the automatic safety and anti dry fire features. Very pleased with how it shoots.

So far I like it a lot. Seems to be pretty spot on. Haven't gotten to shoot it past 40 yds yet.
