Ok I am doing some work on my beloved Remmy 700 in 300 Win Mag and decided she needed some new glass. She current has a Nikon buck masters with in 4.5 x 14x 40. I am looking for a similar power scope, just one with better glass. I have be partial to Leupolds and Nikons as I have always had good experiences with both. I was checking out optics at midway and there are a lot of options in less than $800 price range including some Zeiss scopes. Anyone have any constructive suggestions?

One scope that intrigued me was the 50 mm Leupolds with the little 1/2 circle missing so you can mount it as low as a 40 mm. Anyone have one of these?

I'd look at the vx6 if you want a Leupold.

I second that.

Something to watch out for when mounting a scope as low as it will go...I've been there. I fiddled around with rings and bases I had on hand getting a new rifle set up. I was very focused on getting the objective as close to the barrel as possible and the second or third combination worked beautifully. The objective cleared the barrel by about 1/16 inch. I was pleased with my effort until I discovered the bolt handle would not clear the ocular. Sometimes there's such a thing as "too much of a good thing." You might find specific guidance on the L series scopes if you ask around or make good use of google.

The VX-6 is superior but a little more than your budget. In your price range the VX-R 4-12 is a great scope with good low light performance. With the Vx-r I can clearly see the feeder at 180 yards before and after legal light. I've never used the VX-3L that your talking about but it seems a gimmick to me. You gain the 56mm objective but lose surface area withe scallop. Does that make it a wash.

The VX 6 is a little bit out of the range I was looking at. The VX 3 seems to fall into my price point. I may up the price point a little to upgrade though but is it really that much difference in optics quality between a leupold 3 and 6?

A vx3 50 mm will do you right.

I have a VX-3 LR 4.5-14x40 and it's got pretty good glass. I like the LR model because it has the side focus.

A 4-16x50 Viper PST could be had in your price range.

Or for a little more the Bushnell 3-12 LRS

Or the new Bushnell LRS 2.5-16x44, that's a heck of a range with glass that is quickly earning a great reputation

wait, way cheaper at Amazon

For your desires, I would look for a Zeiss Conquest. You should be able to find a 4.5x14x40 in that price range, and it would be an optical leap above the Buckmaster. Unless you're looking to get into the LR game, I don't know that you need all the bells and whistles--and expense--that comes with choosing big turrets and complicated reticles.

Another scope that I think provides good value is the Weaver Grand Slam in that price range, but the WGS in 4.5x14x40 is a little too bulky and heavy for my likes. I prefer the 3.5x10.

FWIW, my "carrying" .300WM, a Winchester 70 FWT with a custom Douglas sporter barrel, wears a Conquest 3x9x40. My "heavy" .300WM, a trued Rem 700 with a Jewell trigger and fluted Krieger bull barrel, currently sports a Vortex PST, but for years wore a heavy (and obsolete) Burris Signature 6x24x40.

How about a Zeiss Conquest HD5 3-15x42? Cameralandny has demos for $699 that I have been eyeballing. That would be hard to beat for money

Yep, that would be tough to beat for what you want to do.

If it matters, I just picked up a scope off the demo list for Camera Land NY.

The scope was complete and mint, I mean perfect. The shipping was free, as in free, and by FedEx
with a tracking number. I mentioned THF and got a 10% discount off the already good price.

Thanks guys. That deal at camera land on the Zeiss is going to be very hard to beat. Never owned a Zeiss but I know they have a great reputation and lots of satisfied customers. It is much more difficult than I thought it would be to decide on which scope. One thing I guess that I did mention is that this will be a hunting only scope, so simplicity, ruggedness and low light visibility are the most important features at least for me. Thanks for the suggestions and please keep them coming.

Thanks Dawaba, TXHunter80, Gravytrain and everyone. I ordered the Zeiss Conquest HD5 3-15x42 with the Z plex from Camera Land NY. The price was amazing and they sold a new one to me for the cost of Demo because I mentioned the THF. I will take it out here in month or so when I get my rifle back from the gunsmith. I cannot image being disappointed with it. Thanks guys for all the help!!!!!

I put a VX-6 on my 5R Milspec. The 30mm tube, and 50mm objective really raised my line of sight. I have a buddy that was a military sniper who gave me a great tip; you really want your cheek to REST comfortably on the butt stock. I mean like your face fall down on it, relax and be perfectly lined up with a clear picture. With this accomplished, you won't be putting lateral pressure on your stock, and push shots right, or left trying to compensate. There are all kinds of cheek rest pads, but I went old school and started stacking beer can koozies up until I was perfect, wrapped some camo duct tape around it and called it good. (It takes a special kind of deer hunter to use koozies and camo duct tape on a $2600.00 rig, but we ain't out there for style points) Whatever line of sight you wind up with, try this, or anything to get your eye lined up so that the weight of your head is not working against you. Good luck with your scope. I have a Zeiss and it tracks very well.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

I love my Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP Mil/Mil. It is light weight, tough, and very durable. It is not as clear as an SWFA but it is a little cheaper. Also, the warranty and customer service is unbeatable, I have used it twice and both times has been outstanding.
