I still havent bought a reloading press so im trying to find best factory load. I really like the Nosler custom accubond 140grain. It has the velocity listed at 3000fps. I have read that the 280 was initially created for semis and pumps so factory ammo isnt loaded as hot as it could be. But 3000fps for a 140 grain seems pretty close to max for this or say the .270win in comparison of similar round. Have any of you ever chronographed 280 factory loads? Wondering if nosler is exagerating some.

With today's powders running the 140gr at that velocity is very doable without running max pressures so I am guessing it's close depending on barrel length and the usual variations.
I am running 168gr Bergers in my 280 just a tad over 2900 so reloads can make the ole 280 shine.

If you can push a 130 to 3100 fps in a .270, you should be able to get quite close to 3100 in a .280 pushing a 140 if the rifles are similar...but I'm talking handloading. I wouldn't be surprised to see velocities higher than that in the .280 given the new powders that have become available. One thing's a lead pipe cinch: whatever a .270 can do with a given bullet weight, a .280 can outdo with the same weight bullet of similar contruction.

Here is the data on my .280 after it was sighted in from the guy who built it. It shoots Federal TSX 140 grain factory loads really well.

Not to hijack the thread, but I have one rifle that Lex Webernick did for me. That guy knows his business.

I have no doubt it is capable of it. Im just curious if the factory loads are really that hot. Cause from what i have read, they factory loads arent near max capabilities becasue 280rem was initially chambered for semis/pumps. I really need to start reloading.

Can't say for certain, but I doubt if the newer more recent loadings in some factory ammo are still loaded for the old style receivers in 740's/742's ^ 760's which are probably a stronger receiver anyway. I'd bet that Federal loads their Barnes stuff and Nosler loads their stuff at closer to current SAAMI spec. OTOH I also would not be surprised that RP & mebbe Fed Blue Box is still at the original pressure levels.

Be interesting to see if factory ammo pressure specs are available somewhere from Big Green etc ....or contact some of the Gun & Reloading Rag writers like John Barsness for his opinion, as an editor at Handloader Magazine.

SAAMI specs have always hamstrung the .280 Rem. As far as I know no one has offered .280 Remington that exceeded SAAMI specs (60,000 psi). There's no reason a modern bolt-action .280 can't be driven to 65,000 psi just like the .270 Winchester. The problem is that it's awfully hard to know when you're at 65,000 psi, and having been stuck with 60,000 psi loading data for the .280 since time began is no help.

How would one "look into" the 7mm Express?

Do you know of anyone who manufactures rifles for the 7mm Express or 7mm express ammo ?

Do you have a source for load data for it?

It's the same cartridge. Changing the name of the cartridge was just more of Remington's "brilliant" marketing strategy in action. The pressure specs were not changed. Only the headstamp changed.

I haven't heard that since my grandfather passed away. Not sure where the saying came from, but made me think of him.

I have used the factory 140 accubonds with great success. I will try to get the load I am currently using, it is no where close to max pressure, but very tight groups in one of my 280's. The other .280 rifle I have is an older Rem 700 with 7mm express stamped on the barrel. Exact same cartridge, just they changed the name for some reason years ago.

IIRC Name change was trying to breath life into a very good cartridge that was not that popular. They changed it back to 280 after issues with people confusing it with 7mm Remington Mag or that is what one gun rag printed.

kmon, Used to work with a guy from Rockwall that dropped a 7Exp round he'd bought by mistake in his SAKO 7RMg ...and it split the barrel like a banana peel, split & broke the stock to the wrist, with gas going down the magazine well relief, and burned an eye with some permanent damage from burnt powder particles. The bolt never unlocked - it had to be beat open to retrieve the over expanded brass but the headstamp was still clear and readable - and the head space & bolt was not damaged...typical SAKO AIII's over built design IMO.

Said SAKO Finland made the gun good & helped with the Dr bills, even though it was his mistake.

Remmy had a bigtime problem with more than a couple events just like that. Dunno what was the result in a 700 as I'd been out of the Gun bidnizz long time when I worked with this guy selling Computer Software for Y2K issues in main frames.

I would have no hesitation with the Nosler 140 Accubond factory load. I have run the 140 AB bullets since they came out in my 280 reloads. My rifle likes them pushed hot with IMR 4350. If you go with the Nosler factory you will also have some great reloading brass.

Ive read great reviews on the 140AB, from 7mm-08 to 7mm mags. I just dint want to get skimped on velocity to the point where i might as well shoot a 7mm08. Ill use the ranges chrono and test them when they come in.
