Recently been thinking I would like to enter the world of 10mm, with the S&W 1006 in mind, for the purpose of close range handgun hunting, back up while bow hunting, and a large caliber self defense gun. Currently I have a S&W 13-2 .357 4" that fills this niche reasonably, but I am more a semi auto fan than that of revolvers, and I have a guilt and fear of getting the blued finish and wood grips of the 13 out in inclement weather. I don't mind buying and selling guns for the sake of boredom and personal preference, but I am curious to hear from some of the 10mm owners/hunters of there is any real world benefit in making the swap? With the K frame Smith I am limited to mediocre .357 loads and a max capacity of 6, not sure if the 10mm in a pretty hot 180 or 200gr loading would be enough thump advantage over the .357 158gr loads I am shooting when used on a deer, pig, black bear, or similiar sized animal?

I had a 1066, a 1006 would work fine, but there's the issue of the DA trigger or cocking for single action for hunting. I'm thinking that one of the 1911 based 10mm guns might not be better. Another option that comes to mind is an EAA Witness but I'm not sure if it can be carried cocked and locked.

I carry a full frame Glock 10mm that I've had forever. I depend on it and it always comes through.

I went through the same process a while back and ended up picking a standard 1911. The .45 with 200 gr ammo is certainly in the same neighborhood as most 10mm loads. Ammo, spare parts, and knowledge base all factored into it for me, plus being able to get a decent entry level weapon for $420 (RIA Tactical). Deer and pigs out to 50 yds no problem, I'd feel comfortable with black bear, ymmv.

I'd go 45 before 10mm for ammo availability & price if nothing else. Especially if you're going with a metal framed pistol, get a 1911 and be done with it IMHO. 45 ACP +P loads are pretty much on par with 10mm.

The 10mm is far better for hunting than any 45 ACP, with any load.

Legend has it that the 10mm with hotter loads equals a .41 magnum, but since then a cooler, more experienced reassessment puts it about equal to a hot .357 magnum.

The big Glock is the most popular 10mm hunting auto. Most of the others CAN handle full-power 10mm loads, but you wouldn't want to shoot them all of the time as it tends to batter them quite a bit. The story that I get is that the Glock handles the hot hunting loads better.

I'm not a big Glock fan, but that doesn't change the facts. - It's still the best bet for handgun hunting with 10mm.

My favorite 10mm auto is the obsolete Colt 'Double Eagle", but that's just me. I've owned half a dozen 10mm autos and the Glock was best over-all, as much as I hate to admit it.

I had been looking at 10mm semis for a while (Witness Hunter, Delta Elite, other 1911s, etc). I ended up buying a Gen 4 G20 new for under $500 on sale. I reload and wanted to run max loads, so I ended up putting a KKM barrel in it. From everything I've seen the factory barrel is fine with hot loads, but hard on brass with the not quite full chamber support around the feed ramp. On the Gen 4s, the new factory recoil spring system seems to work fine with hot loads, but I run a 22 lb spring for the thermonuclear stuff. It has been very accurate and reliable.

To me Glocks don't have much soul or character, but for a gun that I carry for backup when hog hunting out in the weather and slopping through the bottoms, I don't worry or feel bad if it gets wet or muddy, and it just plain works.

I just don't get it tho, I think Glocks are good looking guns!

Buy a 1911 and a .460 conversion and put the 10mm to shame.

I have delta elite, g20 and g29. Like them all. 29 is a beast but self defense gun. Delta is killer accurate. 20 I carry hunting cause I don't care if it gets beat up. Check out new Sig p220 in 10mm. Looks sweet

The new sig is also available in DA. The recoil on the Delta is not anymore than my kimber 1911 in 45acp. Im sure it would be more with really hot 10 loads.

What I meant to say about the Sig is that its single action only but you can get one that is SA/DA but it is real hard to find right now. The SAO is available lots of places

I shoot the glock 20 and have been very pleased with. I personally believe the hype for the 10 mm is a little over rated. In the semi pistols I wouldn't hesitate to hunt with a +p 45 acp load In a 1911 platform,but think the proven glock is a better hunting gun in the 10 mm. You really need to handload a 10 mm to get full potential of the caliber or buy the Underwood or buffalo bore ammo. Most other factory loads are on par with a warm .40 sw load.

Lots of disinformation floats around about the 10mm, usually originating from 45acp shooters.

I'm a huge fan of the 10mm, shoot it a lot and carry a G29 for CCW. I have all G20's and G29's. A stock Glock can not handle the 10mm +P+ ammo. It can handle the standard full power 10mm loads that it was designed for. When you hot rod the Glocks, you get all kinds of feeding issues along with poor accuracy. When you feed it good 10mm ammo that is at normal 10mm max pressures, they run great. All of my ammo below is loaded this way. It is not your +P+ fodder that will cause feeding and accuracy issues in a stock Glock. Most of your 10mm shooters run a Glock. The other portion generally run a modified pistol for the +P stuff.

The only reason I offer 10mm handgun ammo is because of the lack of good, quality, 10mm ammo on the market.

I like a 45, but I love a 10mm. There is a night and day difference between the 10mm and 45. I don't want to get into a "this round is better than ..." but the 10mm has more energy and penetrates better than a 45. A 45 is great for the 2 legged critters, but a 10mm is great for the 4 legged one's. And I've shot many pigs with a 10mm, and only a few with a 45, and the 45 did not do that good.

Off day today. Was inspired and took the delta to the range along with kimber custom and kimber solo. Recoil did not seem much different betwee the custom (45) and the delta. Was running privi hollow points that say they go 1083. I don't have a chrony. The felt recoil in the little solo 9mm was far far greater than either of the 1911s. Rattled off a few from g29 and it does beat me up. Of course both of the last 2 are ccw and not range /hunt guns. I'd like to try a g20 but have some doubts it could beat the Delta. Then again you can get 2- g20s for the price of the delta or the new sig.

Dealers choice I guess.

Buy you a Glock 20 and get a 6" Lone Wolf barrel and be done with it. (I changed my sights).
I love Colts, BUT... I broke every Delta Elite I have owned (3) with Norma ammo.
I want a STI Perfect 10, but my Glock just keeps running.
I'm watching for the new G40, but I don't think I will get rid of my G20c!
