A year ago today, my son and I, along with two friends were paddling down a remote stretch of the lower Pecos River when we were hit a flash flood, caused by 11 inches of rain falling on us overnight. Since then, I've done a fair bit of research on that flood, as you might imagine, in an attempt to dissect it and learn how to avoid them in the future since we are now, and probably will always be river paddlers. As a result of that research, I posted this story about the events leading up to the flood and the results, including the story behind the photo above. Hope you enjoy the write up and maybe learn a thing or two... LSC: Anatomy of a Flood

Another great write up. I really enjoy reading your work. I grew up fishing the Rivers of Texas and now only have time for a big trip every couple of 3-4 years. We fished the Pecos in 2007 and had an absolute blast and caught a 63 lb yellow cat. Which at the time was the biggest we had ever seen. Our grandfather put it together and at the time he was 76.So we put in at 90 in the bass boats with our kayaks strapped on top and went up river until it got shallow and made that base camp for the boss man. He stuck around with in a mile or so of camp. There is nothing like the Pecos in the world.

Thanks for the great write up and the telling photos. As a river-runner myself, this is a good reminder that we are at the mercy of mother mature when on the water. You never know what can happen out there, and you need to be prepared for nothing less than the worse. Glad y'all made it out and lived for another day and for another river.

awesome work! my son is a deputy sheriff and on the swift water rescue team. They train in rapids near New branfels. When Memorial day floods happened they made multiple rescues. He told me that he had never seen anything like the water they were in. The training rapids were a joke compared to the real thing. He said the power of the water was unbelievable - he also said all this happened at night so it is very difficult to see or get your bearings - great pictures you have here!

Scary stuff right there. It pays to have a healthy respect for the power of moving water. Great write up, as usual. up

Great read. The power of water is amazing. When floating the Pecos or Devils Rivers, a guy can't be too careful.
Adios,
Gary

Great job on the photo essay and story. Hard to imagine all the water and river rise. Glad you were able to see it and live through it. Amazing. Thanks for sharing an experience few will see. cheers up
