Trying for an axis in Boerne. Sat this morning and saw lots of WT, an axis spike and doe, and a very large pig which I should have shot but the axis were stirring and I didn't want to spoil my chances on this big boy I have on cam. Rain has stopped and it is jungle-type steamy.

Here he is this morning on the neighboring ranch.

Nothing so far but two wasps. Very still, no wind. Steam rising from wet ground.

I had the safety off twice but never felt comfortable with the shot.

He was heading to the creek. I'll catch him on the way back in the morning.

Well, got out really, really early - 4:30a, and already had deer at alfalfa. Did a good sneak and managed to get into popup with spooking.

Then the whole darn axis herd started rolling in. By 5am I had 25 axis, including two big boys right out in front. Watched them with the thermal for 90 minutes. Had one nice one right in front at 85 yards but couldn't tell if it was the one I was after.

Just as it got light enough to shoot, it started pouring rain. I mean coming down in buckets.

They moved off to about 150-200 yards in the corner and I could hardly see with naked eye the rain was so bad - but I could see them with the thermal.

As the rain started to let up - everything was foggy/misty - but I could see the big boy I was after. But they started to walk off.

Lined up for a shot, figured the hold-over for the big gun and squeezed the trigger just as a big clap of thunder and Lightning. Boom!! I MISSED! Clean miss and the animals just stood there, no one moved. I don't know why/how missed, but it was a clean miss.

Thought about another shot but the rain started getting bad again and visibility worsened. But the time I could see again, all the axis were gone.

Verified clean miss because I saw him standing in the neighbors field along with the rest of the herd as I left to put on dry clothes.

Argghh!!

Tough luck. I've been there. Literally. Missed a monster in Boerne a couple weeks ago. Stay with it!

Oh man. Looked up the ballistics on the exact load I am using. Boy was I off. I thought the drop was like 30" at 250 yards for the .375h&h. But the actual drop for the Buffalo Bore loads is only about 7" - so I shot WAY over his back.

Heading back out in a few minutes. Looks like another big storm cell is supposed to hit Boerne right at the prime hunting time.

The way things are going this weekend, the animals seem to LIKE the rain!!

Nope. Have my own spot to hunt on a friends ranch.

We call this one the "wide 8", he and his brother just paid a quick visit.
