nsmike, I agree. I think that when we have a really wet year it just tends to further weaken the value of the natural feed.
Adios,
Gary

Gone to Texas, we were talking more about nutrition and less about attraction. You are surely correct that food plots or "Gardens" are excellent attractors of deer and can be an excellent source of nutrition.
Adios,
Gary

Just a comment on gardens. the common garden fertilizers are 10-10-10 and 5-10-10. They are listed percent nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium, when you fertilize your garden, you create a rich source of phosphorus, in a deficient landscape. Good luck keeping the deer out.

They eat more during wet years (and the wet time of year) because the vegetation they're ingesting has a lot more water in it and the salt/minerals are flushing out of their system.

I think that's true of salt and potassium and less true of calcium and phosphorus. The important thing is that mineral intake is increased and they have the opportunity to make use of it.

I am seeing that the mineral and protein amounts in native browse will vary from ranch to ranch as well as from season to season or year to year. Protein pellet rations have mineral/vitamin % in them that are not available to the deer in of the native browse or forbes they have. Not going to get those key minerals and trace minerals in a cattle mineral either. Is a cattle mineral better than nothing at all? You bet but it will not have some key trace minerals in it that deer will need more than a a cow. Deer is growing antler. Ratios of certain mineral and trace minerals is very crucial. To much of one can be very bad for utilization of another. Source of the mineral (chelelate or oxide or sulfate) is very important, a mineral source a cow could use might just flow right thru a deer and out his rear end. Just like to much salt can be very bad for deer. Most loose minerals are high salt content for consumption or used as a limiter to prohibit consumption.

I'm with you. Historically high rain fall areas tend to have lower quality forage also.

What kind of mineral blocks would be appropriate for around Paris?
