Sucks. I guess that stuff spreads through a herd like wild fire?

Yoder farms have produced some of the largest northern whitetail I have ever seen. "Redoy Bill" to name one. I can understand a quarantine of the farm which is highfenced to monitor the herd upon the discovery of 1 infected deer, but to kill the whole herd as a percaution. Im not sure if the containment of the deer within a highfence can prevent the spread of CWD to the wild deer but if so what is the purpose of killing an entire herd which could be easily monitored.

There is no approved live animal test for CWD( although there is one in development) so infected animals are shedding the infectious prions before symptoms appear. Those prions are bio-active for a long time creating an infectious hot spot, there is no known way to disinfect such a spot other than time, that's the theory any way. There is one herd, that is CWD positive, that they are experimentally monitoring for research purposes to see if something less than total depopulation is appropriate. Current practice is depopulation and quarantine for five years.

Meh. All this should be on livestock/ag forum instead of a hunting forum.

Seems like Yoder wasn't cooperating with ODNR and there was an indication of deer "escaping" into the wild? confused2

CWD has been detected in the wild in West Texas in a couple of mule deer cases from the Hueco Mountains. I did some research and wrote up an article about it if anyone is interested.
