Depending on your disability and if it prevents you from physically qualifying for your job and for duty in general. For reserves, VA gets a list of all your drill days annually and they dock you a months compensation for every 30 days you drill in a year. If you go active duty VA compensation stops entirely until you get out. If you re-apply within a year from active duty discharge you will be reinstated from the day following release from active duty. Be prepared for examinations. If you wait more than a year to let VA know you're out your compensation will only be payable from the day you notify them.

I get a VA letter each year totaling up my reserve days. Depending on how many days a year I do...it varies from 50 - 80...after I fill it out and send it back in, they then stop my VA disability for the corresponding amount of months.

There may be something about losing the VA disability once you start drawing your reserve retirement at 60, but I haven't thought that far ahead

The following disclaimer is included on your original 21-526. It's an automatic waiver of VA compensation for receipt of military retired pay. VA Compensation is offset dollar for dollar for military retired pay, with a few exceptions. You can opt out of VA compensation, and get service connected for your disabilities and receive full retired pay as well. The issue is, VA disability compensation is tax-exempt, retired pay is not UNLESS it is disability retired pay. So, for simplicity's sake, let's say $10,000 of your annual income entitlement is standard length of duty retired pay, but you're entitled to, and receive, $5,000 in VA compensation. You'll receive $5k from retired pay, and $5k from VA. Only the $5k in retirement pay is taxable. The $5k from VA is tax exempt.
