I got excellent reports from 3 ranches in Kent, Fisher, and Scurry county last week. Numerous sittings of little quail on all ranches and numerous pairs that we can assume are still trying to get a hatch in. Sighting confirms 2 different age groups of little birds and good numbers in the broods. If we can catch another rain and keep temperatures below 100 the birds that have not hatched a clutch might still get a hatch in. If you are in west Texas and have a windshield accident with a quail please pick it up, freeze it, and get it to Dale Rollins at the quail research ranch so they can determine the prevalence of eye worms. Mailing Address:
Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch
PO Box 61517
San Angelo, TX. 76906

Thanks to all and good and good scouting.

If it isn't white it is not a birddog.

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.

Duval Co. last week:

I am seeing adult pairs
I am seeing big covies (18-25 birds) of first hatch juveniles that are about 3/4 grown.
I also saw two groups of newly hatched "bumblebees" that looked like they were just trying on there wings good.

all Bobs and lots of them. we are having to be careful driving around because they tend to want to stay in the roads because of the heavy brush. when they do flush, they are landing in the trees!

I'm out in Shamrock and the quail hatch looks excellent.
We had ok numbers last year and didn't hunt them but twice.
I think this year will be excellent.
Seeing lots of small birds in good sized covies.

I went to the lease this weekend ( Stonewall County) I saw 5-6 coveys Saturday evening. Covey size 12-20 birds, 3/4 grown. As stated by hwy, the birds were in the road, had to slow down to stop from running them over. They would run a while, then bust up and fly away. The numbers have no doubt increased!!!

I was in Clarendon (Donley County) on saturday and saw a covey of 40-50 blues on a friend of mine's ranch. Some were huge and some were tiny and all the way in-between. All could fly. It is shaping up to be one heck of a year up here.

Coolie,
I agree with you that nothing moves the needle on successful quail hatches like moisture does here in Texas. My question is what happened to the quail in the SE United States that were just as plentiful as Texas not over 30 years ago? Why have they not come back on their own? The Tall Timbers Organization has done great things in restoring wild quail down there but nothing would have happened without that project. And that part of the country had plenty of rain in most years.

Modern, more efficient farming, different crops. It is no coincidence that the golden era of quail hunting was during the later years of the depression, dust bowl when many small farms were abandoned and overgrown.
