Just got a new lease in Hunt County half way between Greenville and Celeste. It is just under 100 acres hardwood river bottom. Lots of oaks, cedars, and hackberry, some abandoned pasture, several tanks. Hasn't been hunted in over 30yrs. There has been no game management here in a long while. Anybody got some free advice for me?

You'll have pigs in the bottoms, but deer will be scarce.

Really funny hearing someone talk about deer in that country. I grew up VERY close to where you are describing and we NEVER heard about deer in that part of Hunt Co. They released a bunch right after I graduated and I hear there is a decent population now. I am interested in seeing where this post goes.

If the tanks have water get them ready for Dove then later Duck season. Hogs for sure. Deer might be a stretch this year but start working it.

What ever happened with the story of the guy who shot a big buck down near Farmersville last season?

We've had family land in that area since the 70's and only in the last 2 years have we seen deer, a lot of poaching I hear still goes on.

Game Warden is a little over the top out that way...if you have bottomland u have a few deer, maybe a few bruisers. Just don't expect Hill Country type numbers. Congrats on the place!

I hunted Hunt County just north east of Greenville and we saw lots of deer every year. We were right on a riverbed and killed some really nice bucks every year. Almost all the deer we saw and killed were on game trails and all the hogs we killed were at the feeders. Deer never came to the feeders much. Some great hunting there

Since TS Bill was dumping rain all over us today it was too wet to work but fine weather for a hike down in to the creek bottom.

Bradgrace, to be honest luck has little to do with it. The place belongs to my grandmother I just finally convinced her to let me hunt it. We had a group of pigs that began tearing stuff up and bothering the livestock so we talked her into letting us pressure them off the property and working with 2 of our neighbors took 12 out of the area in 30 days and the others decided to move on. That helped me convince her it would be OK to hunt deer there as well.

I put up a corn feeder in February but it never attracted any deer, once the hogs moved on the only things on camera were racoons, squirrels, armadillos, and the odd skunk. I think they are not interested due to the acorns every where in the river bottom. There are good deer in the area, lots of sign on the property, tons of tracks near the river bottom. A "Neighbor" about 4 miles away shot an awesome 10pt off his place opening day last year that measured over 140.

I think RDNCK is on the right path about game trails. I need to get out there with a chainsaw and cut some senderos that will be next on my to do list.

Hunt Dog, Yeah there is water in the tanks, and in the pastures, and everywhere else right now. In fact there is a flood warning today.

KCH, I think the game warden you are talking about is Dale Waters. He is a long time family friend and retired last year. He was a tough but as several have mentioned poaching is pretty bad here and really really bad in the south end of the county. They don't just steal game either we had a tree stand, a feeder, and a camera stolen last year.

I put out a mineral (salt) pile in hopes of attracting some deer and (before it washed down into creek) this girl came to have a taste.

Good luck with the new spot! Mine is very similar to yours and I agree with the previous post about pigs in the bottom, but also know that the deer will use it to move back in forth between properties and for bedding areas. It took about 8 months before bucks started showing up on my camera so be patient.

Congrats on already getting a deer pic! If there's doe's out there you know there will be some bucks showing up looking for love in the Fall. smile

Oh and be ready for mosquito's! Having a setup in a bottom is some tough hunting, but very rewarding!
