Headed up to the ranch with my son and hunting buddy to fill feeders and pull SD card. It's not possible keeping our tiny 500 pound protein feeders full being 6 hours away so we've decided to throw corn/soy bean from our broadcast feeders rather than straight corn. What are your thoughts on soy bean from three broadcast feeders throwing 20 seconds each on 3000+ acres? Will it be a waste of money or make a difference?

I would have invested in a timered trough protein feeder. That way you know how long the feed will last and can adjust amount fed according to rainfall.

I have an extra spinner and timer set-up that I plan on using with a homemade shroud and gravity tube to feed 10 pounds a day. This should work until I convince the boss wife that a timed trough feeder is the way to go.

+1 - Lamco's are great, I love mine and the fact I don't have to fill it as often. If your lease is 3 or more hours away, I can show you that the Lamco will pay for itself in one season in fuel costs alone. Two years on the outside.

Plus there is very little waste.

What about the soy bean/corn combo? Think it's even worth the $$$?

If you can keep the livestock, hogs, coons, javis, and turkey off of it then it will work okay.

Titan, I've done what you're doing and it did increase traffic into my place as a different thing being fed but not sure it was enhancing "headgear" per se at those amounts. So, if you want to throw something different at them as more attractant, I think it's OK.

Soybeans will put some weight on them mostly mostly fat and make their coats slick, thats what I've noticed about the deer in the mid west that I've taken off of bean fields, the others I shot lived mostly on browse in the woods didn't have near the fat on them.

It works well providing protein. I would suggest putting out mineral close to it. That's what your not giving them that protein feeds do. Also the coons and turkey will leave the mineral alone which they won't do with protein feed.

My question with the timed feeders: How can you know you are giving the deer access to all they "need" when it's not free-choice? Are you setting the rate of feed based on number of deer x lbs/day?

I like the fact that you can calculate how long the feed will last, but curious if you can give full benefit.

I'm under the impression that some is better than none. I'm sure an accurate amount could be established given the amount of time one was around the lease. I am at the ranch far too little to know how much I would really have to give per day confused2

I view it like this. For example if you have 10 deer eating 15 lbs of protein at the feeder then that is 15 lbs of natural browse/forbs that other deer will now have to eat. Perfect? No but those deer eating the feed will benefit and those other deer will benefit from the extra natural forage. Also setting times at night with timered feeders will target bucks/mature bucks more since they are more active at night time. If those 10 deer eating at night are all bucks then you are definitely making a difference.

How many different deer are you seeing daily on your TC at the feeder now? If you are seeing 15 deer total then you can adjust feed according to that amount. 1#/hd/day goes a long way with deer on good native habitat. Setting your feeding time(s) from 10pm till 4am in the antler growing season will benefit the bucks. Setting times from 15 minutes after daylight in the morning and at sundown in the evening will continue to draw bucks in the fall pre-rut IME.

85 gallon leg ladder feeder.

Which style protein head? Might be able to modify it or sell it to put money towards a new one.

Homemade 4" clear PVC pipe. You'd be surprised how sturdy 3 turnbuckles with some stainless wire from each leg will make it.

I'll get some pics this weekend. It's extremely rigid given it's PVC and 53" long to boot. Those leg ladder feeders I have are very tall and I didn't want to cut the legs.

All Seasons makes a galv. metal funnel with a 4" throat that you can put your tube on. Then mount the funnel/feed tube over your slinger and have a timered feeder if you do not have a funnel on the feeder that is below the bottom of the barrel. Put your control box on the side of the feeder with solar and run wires to motor/slinger under the feeder in normal location.
