I made a dumb a mistake using a 2 piece ss cleaning rod going from the muzzle
of my 5R barrel to clean oil off from a laser boresighter

i nicked a tiny bit at the land

going to get a recrowning tool and muzzle pilot from Brownell to smooth
that little nick out

any of you tried their tool and pilot?

was the cut nice and smooth ?

Have you shot it? If not do that first.

The crown is very important, but maybe you got lucky.

I found that Brownells did not have the crowning tool that I wanted in stock, and instead tried out one of the tools made by Pacific Tool and Gauge.

I got an 11 degree cutter that would work on my Winchester 1885 in 270WSM. I shortened the barrel from 28 inches to 24 inches... Handles much more nicely now, and is slightly more accurate.

Click an image to see it full-size.

Use lots of oil, stop to clean out chips often, go slowly. Take your time.

Having said that, the pictures do not show that at one point, I used an electric screwdriver to turn the tool, as a time-saver. It hogged out the metal more quickly, but introduced chatter that I took out by slow and careful cutting by hand, with light pressure. After that, wet-or-dry sandpaper used wet as shown smoothed it out just fine.

Wow... id have to drink that entire bottle of jack before I took a hacksaw to that gun... and then the work wouldn't look as good either.

Yes, it took a lot of gumption to hacksaw that beautiful rifle. - But it did not handle well until I did. If it had been a 270 Winchester instead of a 270WSM, I would have taken it down to 20 inches instead of 24.

It lost about 1/3rd of a pound and now handles like a dream.

Kind regards, charlesb
