Take a LOOK at this one. We used it in our butcher shop daily, and it held up great. Had to replace the probe once, but otherwise everything worked well.

$149.95, but you should never need another!

These get good reviews and are on the lower end of the price scale. Should have one coming for Father's day, will let you know afterwards. ThermoPop

There is only one to get-- the Thermopen. Watch BBQ championships and you will see every top cooker using one. Buy it and never look back.

I just picked up a Maverick dual probe that I'm really liking. Works up to 300' and has timers, alarms etc.

I have a Weber dual probe that I use for long cooks. Very inexpensive, works with a remote has both preset and custom temp capability. Also have an Acu-rite for quick checks, cost about 15.00 and gives temps in 5-9 seconds. I calibrated them using boiling water and they were all within a degree. Can't justify the cost on the high end ones. They don't do anything the less expensive ones do that I can tell.

Agree...just do yourself a favor and buy one. Once you use it, you'll understand why. I've tried several different others that were less expensive, but none were even close to as good as the thermapen.

I have an Accurite with a 6' lead. I leave the probe in the cooker until the meat gets close to ready, then start monitoring the meat. Best $15 I've ever spent for cooking.

If you have an iPhone or iPad get the iGrill2. Utilizes Bluetooth technology. Gives you the ability to chart your cook. It has 4 ports so you can monitor your ambient temperature and three meats. Or you monitor four meats. It only comes with two meat probes. The ambient probe and any other meat probes are extra. I've cooked a brisket, pork butt, and turkey all at the same time with each having it's own probe and the ambient probe measuring the temperature from the smoke chamber. All sitting on my couch. It sells online for $99.

Click here for the iGrill2 website

To the original poster, are you looking for an instant read or one to leave in your larger cuts of meat while cooking?

They sell a slew of them at target, academy, walmart, heb, most grocery stores etc. I have yet to use one that didn't do its job.
