Brother in law in Montana is sending down a bunch of antlers to make the kids some slingshots but I thought I'd put a knife together for him. Is ordering a blank and puting a handle on it really that good of a gift? It doesn't seem like you're really doing much but it would be his antlers.

IMO, as a "real" knifemaker, the key to the whole thing is to represent yourself honestly. If you buy a blank, put handles on it, mark it with your name, and sell it like you "made" it, that's dishonest. If you buy blanks, put handles on them, sell them at a reasonable price for handled blanks, that's OK, if you say that you only installed the handles. Your idea for a gift is a great one, and a good way to get started into the craft.

Jason is spot on; nothing wrong for putting it together as a gift with the understanding you didn't produce the blade. Besides it takes some talent to work with antlers and making them look good.

Thanks men. I think I'll try it out, I'm surely not a knife maker but I bet I can get him together a nice knife with his antlers on it. I might decide I like it and try a few more who knows.
