Looked it up and it's Cholla cactus...never seen this before but my new lease has quite a bit. Really neat looking cactus.

our lease is about 35 miles SW of Abilene so I was not expecting to see this so far east.

After it dies and dries up it makes great fuel for the smoker. It is commonly used in Arizona and California for smoking meats. Have used quite a few times with the addition of it to charcoal in my weber. Has done nicely.

I have hunted a lot of country in NM where the chollo is so thick that they go in and remove it mechanically. Deer,coyotes and even bear feed on the blooms.
