I've got 10-12 coons at a feeder each night, what's the best method to get rid of them?

Dog Proof traps. I set 2 per feeder or water trough. A couple each night and after a while they are not a problem. I keep my traps out year round.

I've had the same problem in the past. Tried trapping first. Had fair success for awhile. Starting out live trapping and relocating them. They got wise to that so I had to switch to leg hold traps. Caught quite a few that way...then they started avoiding anything that didn't look to be part of the feeder.

Finally decided to put together a sort of purpose built 'Coon Sniping' rifle... and THAT seems to resonate with them! The report of the rifle and one less of their comrades...does not go unnoticed.

After dropping the first couple of Corn Bandits...the rest of group were still visiting the feeder...BUT were obviously 'nervous'.

The next couple taken out...resulted in the remaining Coons moving their 'raiding' time into the wee hours of the morning. No problem, I can be there, this is WAR!

The last one I shot had them all leaving like their heads had caught fire and their a$$es were 'catching'. Been over two weeks now and they haven't returned.

Either they decided to 'move on', or they are preparing a counter-attack.

Hit them hard with the dogproof style traps for awhile. That will thin the little bandits out and the rest will pretty much wise up. You will reach a point that you are not trapping enough coons to be worth the effort. Pull your traps, oil them up and store them until the coons become a problem again. Rinse and repeat!

You know, a 22LR is only about 15 cents per round and if you shoot 10 coons, that comes to about a buck and a half, compared to what a trap may cost plus your time to set it, check it, and the trouble of emptying it!!!

Times two. Corn does it every time. Be sure to secure them to something as they will walk off, sometimes.....

Shhhhhhhh better to be quiet than remove all doubt..

I tried corn and no luck. I have 6 duke dog proof traps that I set out last hunting season and never caught one coon. My TC is full of coons and I used about 4 tubes of grease to grease the legs on the feeders which is about the only thing that works to keep them from taking apart the timer/spinner.

We use fruit loops and dry cat food that smells fishy. Works good!

Try canned tuna in oil in your trap. Just use a little of the tuna and oil.

Hey spg, I use 4" PVC 5' long the coons and squirrels can't climb the legs, tried the grease and hot pepper with lard that kept the deer away, the smell I guess.

I have baited dog proof traps with mini-marshmallows. Just be careful....dog proof traps are not "skunk proof". That was fun - for everyone else at camp.

Dog proofs are the most efficient way your going to remove them. Just have to learn how coons work and how to efficiently use the traps and it's money in the bank

A good .22 and a bright flashlight do the trick pretty well. Set your flashlight on a tripod if you can, and light them up once they're there. Those lil suckers will set you up for a great shot as long as you're quiet and behind the light. They'll stick around for a good while too so you can take your time making the shot count.

Of course, I'm shooting them across my porch (~50 ft) if they're eating cat food, or off my roof (~35 yds) if they're messing with our chicken tractor. Now, I can't always be there, so I'm looking to get a few dog proof traps because it does seem that they're really becoming problematic this year.

We've taken about 9 this year and they just keep coming. The good part about it is it's free targets, and you can't beat that!

Have fun, be safe.

Dang, I am surprised that they will come to the feeder for corn and even tear up a timer for it, but wont reach into a BP trap for it. You have unique coons. I am at well over 300 coons on just corn. We have had them come up on the porch for cat food, so we put cat food in the DP traps there.
I guess it is time for the weird concoctions, good luck.

Two or three of my bluetick hounds seem to solve all the problems with less effort and more fun.
Adios,
