I wanted to buy a hand held thermal device but didn't want to spend what a new one cost and couldn't find a demo or refurb unit.

I decided to buy a Seek XR to see what they can do. I got a brand new one off of eBay for $220. This one use iOS but they also make them for Android devices.

I had my wife stand in the road with one of the dogs and took pictures at 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards. I did this twice. One time with a white pallete and once with orange. White appears a little better.

There are lots of trees around us so it cluttered it up a bit but where I will be using it will be pretty much open fields so the picture should be clearer.

My goal is 150 to 200 yards of detection on incoming hogs, nothing more. After detection I will switch to the X-Sight.

It is going to take a while to get the pictures inserted so anyone reading this in the next few minutes won't see any.

This device shows some possibilities. The proof will be in the pudding, I won't be back to the lease for a while, so I won't know for certain.

I thought i would post this in case someone else is interested.
Hope someone finds it useful whether it be to rule it in or out as a purchase.

Looks good so far. I know they advertise it going out to 2000 feet but Im thinking all you will pick faint speck at that distance by looking at your photos. Personally I wouldnt have a need for that much distance maybe 1k tops.

Will something like that pick up heat through a scope?

No, Thermal cannot see through glass.

So has anybody used this for scanning prior to picking up the NV scope in the field (cough - beaubien)? I'd like to read an opinion or two before pulling the trigger on one myself.

I have not used it for scanning while hunting. Unfortunately I will not be back at the lease for a while.

My sense is that this will be a decent tool out to a hundred yards. It may work farther but don't want to give an opinion.

Even if I saw a speck at 200 yards that wasn't there on a previous scan, it would alert me to turn on the NV rifle scope. That is all I am after. My average shot is about 50-75 yards at night with my longest being 154. I ranged the distance to the feeder from where I was sitting before dark.

I'll try and ride some back roads in the next couple of weeks to see if I can find some yotes or deer or something.

How would you be using and what would your expectations be? Do you need recognition as well as detection?

Beau, only detection. I'd switch to my photon XT for recognition. My shots normally would be around 150 or less, but wouldn't mind being able to determine if hogs are in a field a little further (working permission to shoot some peanut fields in south Alabama). I understand it may not hit my second benchmark, but anything has got to be better than wielding that photon for scanning. I like the idea of thermal more than the night vision monoculars I can afford.
