Cast iron works on the grill just like it does on your kitchen’s stovetop:
Place it directly on your grill’s grates and let it get ripping hot. Pour a tablespoon or two of a neutral oil into the skillet and wait until it starts smoking. Then place your patties in the skillet—make sure things don’t get too crowded—and step away from the grill and let your burgers cook, covering the grill (with the top vent open) for a minute or two during the process to let the patties pick up some smokiness. Cook till done salt & pepper to taste. cheers

Just what kind of smokiness are the burgers picking up?

I don't see the point. Use one or the other, both are good.

Mrmo is good people. My two cents, either fry or grill. Both are good!

I'll heat it on the grill sometimes because the house smells like fried burgers for 2 or 3 days after if I cook inside and can't open windows. Plus it's messy. Easy cleanup outside.

Get on Youtube and search for BBQ Pit Boys, they use a cast iron skillet on the grill a lot and enjoy most of their videos.
