I have a 20+ year-old Win M70 HB/synthetic that I've mainly used as a hunting rifle. I bought it from a guy in 1994 that bought it to shoot bench but didn't like the recoil and was going to something smaller like a .223 or .243. I would say the round count on my part is 300-500 and it was almost NIB when I got it. It shoots well, probably better than me, but I would like to know whether or not this rifle is worth investing more dollars in, such as cutting/threading the barrel, cerakoting, upgrading the stock/scope, etc. and turning it into something that will go 600-1000 yards with consistent accuracy. I have a place to shoot so that isn't a problem-I will be shooting it and will be handloading for it and others eventually. Am I better off starting over and mothballing/selling this one? What can a gunsmith tell me about its measurements and what would that cost me? TIA.

How does it shoot now? Is the barrel free floated in the stock? The older rifles generally shoot very well. It depends on what you are looking for, and what this rifle can give you. Handloading for it with ammo tuned to the rifle will be the most accurate. Pick a good high BC bullet for it and put it through it's paces. Once you shoot it some and get a feel for the rifle, you should be able to answer how well it does. You have to shoot it to know for sure.

If you have shot the rifle 500 times, you ought to know if you are in love with it or not. If you have the cash to doll it up, you should have the cash to go new.
If you like to shoot half a county away, I suggest something new like a Shilen or another custom action with a McMillan barrel.

I don't really love it (or hate it) but it has some nostalgia as it's taken probably 95% of my deer since I got it, including my best ones to date. BTW the caliber is .308 Win. It shoots sub-MOA with factory loads right now and that's with me driving it-possibly with some of Chad's ammo or a really good hand load it would be .5 or better? I usually shoot 150 gr since that's what I hunt with. I did try some HSM 168gr Berger VLD ammo, Nosler 165 gr, and one other brand in that weight class but either I didn't shoot that well that day or it didn't find one of those to it's liking. I did not find the twist rate on the barrel-is it likely 1:12 being of that vintage? It is free-floated.

If it's shooting sub-MOA with factory ammo, then it is worth investing in. A handload tuned to it can't do anything but improve performance. And being a .308 Win, you don't even have the barrel broke in yet at 300-500 rounds.
