For general use - deer, pigs, coyotes, not suppressed, which upper would be best? Finding similar deals on both uppers and ammo, so the most appropriate caliber is the main decision.

This has been discussed multiple times. Do a search, there are multiple threads on the topic.

I went 300 BO, but I am running a suppressed SBR with thermal.

6.8 has slightly more energy on target, but the 300 blk out has many more bullet and ammo options. 300 blk out for me.

I have both. Suppressed/Night Vision 300 BO, all other times 6.8. I also have a 6.8 with night vision and love it. I'm building a 6.8 for a friend now. Great gun for Texas hunting. My daughters love to shoot them too. Hardly any recoil.

I went 6.8 because I plan mainly on shooting factory ammo at deer up to 200 yards, and the 6.8 puts more energy on target.

They both work but I prefer the 6.8, just seems to anchor them faster.

6.8 is what I use mostly suppressed but sometimes unsuppressed, more energy on target

The 6.8 is the #1 choice for hunting deer and hogs in an AR15

6.8 SPC no question - more powder and similar bullets (weight).

There are deals right now on Olympic Arms K16 for around 700.00 for a complete gun, I have been researching the caliber for a buddy so that is where I am coming from.

I'm making a 6.8 sbr tomorrow when my 12.5" barrel arrives. I'm fixing to get rid of my blackout 8.5" noveske barrel that In which I couldn't couldn't warm up to the blackout. Wanted to find something with a little more thump. Palmetto arms also has good plinking/hog/deer ammo for the 6.8. Federal ammo with a 90 grain gold dot bullet moving 2800 fps out of a 16" barrel for 12.99 a box. It's overrun contract ammo that was made for a foreign contractor. If you want heavier round to retain more energy hornady 120 sst suppose to work great. Handloaders are getting 200 fps faster then the factory hornady 120 sst in spc ii barrels, over 2600 fps with a 120 grain sst, thats up there with .243 winchester energy there and out of a 16" barrel.

Bunch of info

No comparison, pick the 6.8 for deer & hogs. If you handload, you'll find that the bullet makers have designed a number of game bullets for this round in the 90gr to 110gr range. In particular, look at the Nosler 100gr Accubonds.

for Hog hunting, do the 300 blkout.
you can get a can and subsonic ammo. quiet as a .22 suppressed with the stopping power to kill a hog

I've owned both. I still have the 300BLK. I reload for it, so it gives me a lot of options. I have to admit though, I have never loaded or shot subsonic from it.

I'll probably build another 6.8 with an 18" barrel by Fall.

To me the blackout does subsonic and very short sbrs very good. Many people dont realize It's has the same energy as a 556 75 grain bullet out of 16" barrels at 100 yards and 200 yards, just a little more mass with 110 blackout loads! So no blackout for me when i shoot a 556 with heavies already.

Did either one of you even read the original question?

for general hunting purposes, non SBR, non suppressed, 6.8 is the obvious winner. No question.

Best advice I can give you is to look up the ballistics for both calibers and form your own opinion. I think you will come to see your choice as obvious once you look into it a bit.

The 6.8 will give you more energy on target. That is a fact. Whether it gives you "slightly" more energy or "substantially" more is a matter of opinion as those words mean different things to different people.

People love to twist numbers around to favor their pet cartridge. Just compare multiple loads with different bullets and decide which one you think will do a better job of killing a deer/pig with an unsuppressed barrel. The 6.8 and .300 BO were both designed to do certain things extremely well, and both have things that they do not do well.

The statement the one guy made about the .300 has more ammo options befuddles me. The 6.8 has far more commercially available hunting rounds than the .300 blackout (which is what matters for you since you are looking for a hunting gun,) and I would say that both calibers have around the same amount of factory loads available over all.

Both are fun calibers and both perform well when used within their limitations.

Went through this same decision several years ago. Started out dead set on the 300BLK until I started researching the two. The 6.8 is the only way to go in my opinion. I like 30 calibers better but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't convince myself that the 300BLK was superior in any way to the 6.8 except when suppressed.

I answered the questiion Crews! 6.8 all the way. I gave my reasons for the choice, as there is hardly no difference between the blackout and a 556 shooting heavy bullets.

I like the 6.8 or 6.5 Grendel over the 300BLK. However, I know that
I never want to buy a suppressor. 6.5 Grendel has the same energy at 200y
that 300BLK has off the muzzle. 6.5 is an honest 300y Tx deer/hog rifle out
of an AR15 platform IMO. 6.8 just just a touch behind it. 300BLK is 150-200y
IMO.

But the 300BLK is a great round, particularly if you EVER want
to get a 9mm suppressor anyway, they make great little dual purpose
ones for 9mm/300BLK subsonic. Some will even do 223/300BLK full power
as well.

In some ways it's also nice that 300BLK share the same 223/556 mags, in
others, it's scary.
