At least this time of year. Man, with the incredible amount of rain the pastures are like I have never seen them. We have ZERO deer activity at the two feeders we are running. Once the first rains hit in March they flat out turned off. Good to see I guess. Lots of hogs and turkeys though.

Yep they prefer native food over feeders any day. I also think they to some extent associate feeders with bad things and so if they can get what they want elsewhere they will.

If someone gave you the choice between a steak and a hot dog, I suspect that, you would choose the steak every time. It doesn't mean you hate hot dogs but the steak is a better option. Deer are no different, they can also be lazy, it's likely they have good fresh growth closer to their bedding area than your feeders are. If you have a normal summer things will start drying out by the end of the month.

With all they have to eat, choosing the corn would be like eating ice cream instead of Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings.

I saw where someone was going to try alfalfa pellets. Anybody tried this yet?

I sure do love ice cream. I think with the evidence from our cams it makes no sense to throw corn until Sept which is what we normally do. I might fill one of our fenced feeders in July to see if we get activity there since the pigs can't get in.

I guess it depends on where you're at

I've got coastal and wheat fields all over,, in addition to fresh growth...

went to check on my cams on sunday and noticed
my 600 lbs gravity feeder I filled 2 months ago is empty

cam had 5800 pics of 5 bucks and 2 does feeding several times daily
and staying a good 10-15 min each

one leaves another jump right in

maybe you have bad corn smile

I guess it depends. They still clean up at my feeders. But with the high deer density I understand why. However when I drive up there I'm not running off two or three bedded by it so I guess it's not quite so high on their priority list right now.

It's a complicated formula, deer don't eat much grass, when they do it's at certain stages, then it'll lose palatability If the available forage is high in calcium and low in phosphorus they'll hit the corn to balance out the minerals. Try to remember that ideally, deer need a 2/1 ratio of calcium to phosphorus and 14% to 18% protein, corn is high energy and fairly high phosphorus but low in protein.

I am switching leases this year. I am moving to a place around Cisco where it is heavy thicket of mesquite trees. Even though they got a lot of rain there is very little grass due to no sun light hitting the ground in the red sandy soil. A couple off feeders have been up a couple of weeks and camera pics look promising and they are coming to corn right now. The lease where I am moving from looks totally different. A lot of grass and "browse" plants that the deer like. They were not coming to the corn very much at all. So I guess it just depends on your lease on what the deer are eating now.

Doe with fawn can always use the carbs while lactating as well.

In the same area. Lots of browse. My protein bill has gone to near zero. banana
Occasionally a deer will stop by and check out a feeder to see if it is still there. grin

I dunno, in top of native forage we have plenty of rye grass and a decent amount of clover and the neighbors have some planted fields, but nonetheless they're relentless on the corn gluten protein feeders as you can see below.

The deer usually always visit the feeder when its slinging just not as interested with all the available browse. Keep it slinging they'll be there sooner than later. They are starting to hit the protein regularly on our place, just put some out a week ago and they were on it the first night.

The deer in my area sure are coming to the feeders.

I do have protein mixed with it.

But they are there waiting for it to go off.

We checked our cameras again and no deer still. They might be in Texoma since our creek feeds the Red about 15 miles away. grin We have clover everywhere this year. Just too much good stuff to eat still. Might be this way all summer.
