So I seen on you-tube how to dig a water well by hand, and thought I'd try it. Purchased a solar pump off ebay & materials at local hardware store. My land is here on the coast, with a shallow water table I hit water at 13 feet. Dug the pond area. digging equipment. digging the well hole. hit water installed 6" pipe for casing. installed pump, solar panel, hose, Presto------- water!!

Missed this pic of the materials used. If any of you have questions about doing this, check out videos on youtube. Pretty informative. It would be hard to do anyplace rocky or deep water table.

Some high-tech... We spent income-tax money for a 63 foot water well.. Before that we hauled water... that brings back memories.... if had the money could convert it ta solar power ... Good info...

There has been a lot of wells dug with that rig in Abilene, on eth northwest side of town water is about 18 to 22 feet down. Our well is 25 feet deep, the water table is at about 18 during normal years.

My first cousin dug one by hand in north west Abilene on Yorktown street about 45 years ago and made a well but it cost him a double hernia surgery.

That's just awesome!!! I've been looking into doing the same thing to fill up a tank to water my garden. Who did you buy from and how many gallons an hour are you able to get?

I never tasted the water, as it would be considered "brackish", and guessing it would be salty being just off the Gulf. The solar pump I got off ebay, and seems to be halfway quality material though they are all made in china so "buyer beware". Those cheaper plastic ones look worthless, so go with a stainless even though more $$. The digger & other materials came from the local lumber yard. Gallons per minute depends on depth of well, pump brand, sunshine, ect. Mine is about 35 gallon/minute. My pump came as a kit with everything enclosed and I got it for $225 on ebay. I have no ideal what it actually listed for.
Surprisingly, it seems to be working pretty good.

If you intend to use it as a stock tank it can be slightly brackish, less than 4000 ppm for cattle, otherwise it's a duck pond

Nice work.
Coincidentally, last week I was working at a gold mine on the Barwick Road not too far from Sioux Narrows. - nice country and loads of walleye.

Small world, hey Hirogen?? Barwick road, would that be the Blackhorse mine? My camp is out on Dryberry Lake, just up the river from Berry Lake. A long-g-g way from Texas!

It's a new mine called the Rainy River Project. You drive west from Fort Frances about 25 miles to the Barwick road (first road west of hwy 71). You than head north about 20 miles on the Barwick road. I was working at the camp which is about 5 miles from the actual mine installing equipment for the water treatment plant.
Actually some of the locals called it the Blackhawk mine as the intersection of the Barwick road and secondary road 600 is locally known as Blackhawk.

Mine is about 35 gallon/minute. My pump came as a kit with everything enclosed and I got it for $225 on ebay. I gotta check this, your saying that little panel pumps 35 gallons a minute? As in you could fill up a 55 gal drum in les than a min and half? That's insane, I never would have guessed those things worked that good, or that that well would keep up with the demand for 35 gal/min.

Its some good info, thats what count's... 35gals an hour, wish had the extra cash... Edit: Was looking at old photo's, we started out hauling water in old iglue coolers in a red wagon, no plumbing we paid $1,000.oo for well, rented machine ta dig line, did plumbing ourselves... Our kids didn't know they were underprivellaged...

Thanks. I never thought to look on ebay. I've sort of forgotten about that site since it seems that most everything on there cost more then Amazon. My goal is to get 2,500 gallons a day to water my garden doing something very similar. I want to pump it into a tank, then when it's full, drain it through a series of pipes to my veggie beds and fruit trees.

Surprisingly, it seems to be working pretty good. If the water is not potable then why pump it to the surface? Nothing will use it? How much deeper is potable water?

Here on the Gulf everything is salty. The mist (fog) coming off the Gulf will rust your gun overnight, if not cleaned or oiled. Most people just drill around 40+ feet to hit potable water, and even that is nasty iron & probably salty. Unless 'ur on city water, you buy bottled for consumption. Most these ranches pump shallow to their livestock, so if the cattle gulp it down guessing the deer & hogs won't complain. I have a deeper well at my house, and have never tasted it in over 6 years. It's all swampwater in my thoughts being so close to the bay.

I have saltwater bout 1 mile from me on one side and about 3 miles or less on the other. Don't have to dig far to hit water especially now. I have city water (end of the line) that feeds the house etc, have a well that I use for the lawn/garden/dogs etc that is supposed to be around 100'. I've tasted the water & it wasn't salty at all, don't have iron stains etc on my house. Have a neighbor that I'm guessing has a shallower well because he has red stains all over.
