When will the 2015/2016 hunts go online? I've never tried before, but thinking of registering for hunts this year.

It takes a couple years to get drawn but worth it when it happens.

Do you recommend putting for as many as you can afford?

I use to get drawn about 50% of the time. But then again I only applied at the WMAs that offered high "odds" of getting drawn. Even if I didn't get drawn I could usually show up the morning of the hunt and get a stand-by permit. All that will probably change with the new system they started last year. frown

I would put in, and let it roll. I used to get drawn at least 1 hunt a year. But I also would put in for almost every category they had. But the last 2 years I have not been drawn. I have also went on several "standby" hunts, just show up at the starting day of the hunt and they will tell you if "standbys" will be available.

You only get one loyalty point so the first couple years I would apply only once in each category. The odds will be interesting to see this year since they went to an online application system

Apply for the ones that you are interested in and willing to travel to. I applied for about 12 last year, and was drawn once. I had a successful hunt, and most definitely going to try again this year!

Do the points expire? I haven't put in for several categories in years, but the points still show. I'm not complaining. Just that Montana drops all your points if you fail to apply for two years.

I always apply for the mule deer buck rifle, one of the pronghorn hunts, and the desert bighorn. I've been drawn once for the mule deer and was successful on the Sierra Diablo hunt.

I'm in Austin, what are some places I could apply to hunt?

I'll try again this year, but so far all I've gotten is a bunch of points.

Me too, I'm cursed on the draw hunts. I've got at least two handfuls of points in everything. Knowing my luck, I'll get drawn for every hunt in the same year.

I get drawn about every 2-3 years. Still yet to be drawn for a buck hunt or any of the exotic hunts, but every one I have been on has been a good experience.

I put in for four or five different categories each year now for eight years in a row, plus ten tickets each year for the "Big Time Texas Hunts," without ever being drawn.

This will be first year with no youth hunts, so our chances to get drawn will be slim. We have drawn 1 general hunt in last 5 years of applying. Had great luck with youth hunts, usually getting drawn at least once per year.

So they they aren't doing the youth category for hunts anymore?

They are. He is just saying his kids have grown up and no longer eligible.

I know what you mean. Mine ended about 4 years ago. Talk about lucky, my son drew at least one hunt for 5 years straight, missed a year, then drew a hunt on the last time as a youth. He killed his first deer on one of these hunts.

Lake Brownwood was 20 yards with a shotgun.

It varies depending on the park, terrain, and the cover, but it has been my experience that it is anywhere between 50-100 yards.
