No doubt Calhoun County is a sportsman's paradise. Before you know it, you will not miss the Hill Country. I'm in the area on the opposite side of Victoria and I cannot think of a better place in Texas to own property than in this region. As you get your place up to speed, don't forget the deer & hog hunting that the Aransas NWR can provide.

Nice!

And you are in a great spot. True, it will never be the hill country - but the flip side is that the hill country will never be the coast either. Both have a lot of things to offer that are unique and awesome.

I'm a coastal boy myself, and as such tend to gravitate towards the prairies, marshes and flat loamy plains that we have down here over hill country. You have a great opportunity to get a diverse set of game animals in, I'm rather jealous.

One of these days.....

That's a funny one, Western. lol. No, I won't be doing much until this fall for a couple reasons. The heavy rain, though we had little flooding in this area, has water standing everywhere. Still waiting to put in the new driveway approach off highway 185, road ditch is flooded. Also I am respecting a current neighbors cattle lease until this fall. But I am doing all my leg work, getting things organized. It'll all come together, just gotta' figure a couple year game plan. I'll post some pics as things progress, later this fall. Shopping now for tractor, equipment, designing fences, planning seeding, checking out cattle, and looking into a small cabin for the property right now. Leaning towards a Kubota tractor, lining up a shipping container for storage, checking out several cabin designs, and probably go with Brahman cattle though the Santa Gertrudis are sweet.

I am hoping big time things get dried up by this fall so I can get things started in the cooler weather.

FINALLY, got to spend a work week on my new land & did I ever get a bunch accomplished. First, bought a new Kubota M7060 and is it ever sweet. The land was partly swamped this summer, then the Bag Pod Sesbania beans took over. So 4 days of mowing broke the tractor in mowing.

This is how thick those darn beans were, so hoping I can break the cycle after a couple years of mowing. Even the hogs had a tough time getting through them.

I then hired a local earth mover to build 2 ponds. A nice pond up front near a future cabin building site. The dirt from the pond was used for a foundation site.

Then towards the property back a large duck & wildlife pond was dug out.

I was pretty happy with all the work I got done, before heading back to Minnesota for 3 more weeks. I will be back in Seadrift by the 20th of October for the winter to start my fencing & setting up feeders & stands. I am excited with all the hog sign, Bobwhite Quail, and Doves on the property. I am tickled with my new land, and have big plans setting up the hunting & cattle on it.

Best helper you will ever have on a property is a good tractor, great looking place you have, should use up most of your "free" timegrin, but it is fun work

Thanks Western, I feel so lucky picking up this section of property & it is only 4 miles from my home in Seadrift. I can see a vision of how to set this place up for a wildlife magnate, with the brush near the back and the ponds to draw the waterfowl & critters in. Also, I was impressed with the natural grasses growing in those weeds. The cattle will love this place. Probably won't get much hunting done this year, but should have things ready next season. Work work work!

That kind of work will keep you young, well "youngish" LOL A great stress reliever, even on bad days.

Probably already have quail too, they should benefit from some clearing and increased edge line.

Congrats on getting so much accomplished!!! That's a really nice tractor. Is it Tier 4? Any issues with it? I'm still afraid of Tier 4 and hoping it all goes away before buying something new.

Yes EddieWalker, it is a Tier 4 tractor. Thanks to our great government & the EPA pollution control. I did lots of shopping and settled on Kubota M7060 model. It is a sweet running unit and though I only put 36 hours on it seems to have great power, turns sharp, quiet, easy handling, nice AC/heater, built for comfort. With the loader, it was just over $45K with a great warranty.

My next project on the property will be to start repairing & building fence. Going to be nasty clearing those old thorny vines rapped all up in the old fence, but I'm going to jump right in. Might just build a new barbed fence inside the old overgrown fenceline, and have a double fence. To do it correctly one should grub the old out with a dozer, but I don't think I'll be going that far. The wildlife will love the nasty thick fence row.

Congrats on getting your own piece of Texas. I'm really jealous of your tractor though. I spent a few hours last week grading washed out road with the FEL. No PS, A/C etc. Your rig is much nicer. Enjoy!

You may be surprised on that fence once you get it "uncovered", may be a perfectly good fence and save you time and $.
