This is a very good rifle i bought this for my cousin in 7mag and did load development for it at extended ranges out to 600yds. With that being said i think for the money there are better options. Such as savage lrp in 260 and if you want a more compact rifle tikka ctr in 260. The 7mag and 300 mag are solid lr choices but if just ringing ateel or ounching paper the 260 is the way to go.

Just remeber there are alot of factors that go into a LR gun and those should be based on you and your preferences. Such as bbl length, twist, height of comb, lop, caliber, intended use, handload vs factory, etc. The sako is quality though. The other big factor is the glass i cant stress that enough. I am a 2nd focal plane guy and for me a variable 20+ power is a must. You can get by with 14x-18x but its a harder learning curve. Also reticle type is very important to the shooter. Hold overs arent a problem inside 500 for most calibers but look at ballistics out at a grand and you can see why the glass is very important specifically adjustment. Its not so much rifle or caliber, although there are "better" calibers for lr work a true lr rig is several factors dialed in right not just brand or caliber. LR shooting is very adductive.

I agree with Jorge and will ad to narrow down your choice based off if you reload or shoot factory. Some calibers are offer very little in factory match quality ammo.

What caliber? The rifle should be ok. But the gun will only be as accurate as the quality of ammo you feed it. Ammo is a huge part of the equation out past 400 or 500 yards.

To elaborate what chad said if you look what most guys who shoot a grand do is handload. About the only off the sheld contender would be the 6.5cm 140 amax factory offering. Even then its not common.

Go with a used vx3 6.5-20x50 (around 550 off ebay or the like), send to leupold for mildot replacement (like $100), then send to kenton industries and have new turrets cut to your load if ya wanna save money. Itll hang with a scope twice the price easy. Or buy one from them and get turrets for free. Or go with a NF and be done with it. Have fun itll get addicting.

If your shooting a grand consider spending the extra coin on a NF (MOAR reticle). I have a VX3 6.5 - 20x50 and it doesn't compare to my NF. If its to much coin try the SWFA SS.

I'd ask if they would install their new moa style reticle before downgrading to mil reticle with moa adjustments.
