What if the intruder is in your kid's room and your wife needs to get in there to stop a threat? You wouldn't want her to go there if you're not home?

As an A class USPSA shooter, I'm awful fond of a pistol. Use what you're most comfortable with, but know it's limitations.

Do you really think any mother is not going to "go in?" And if she went into the tight quarters of a bedroom I would want her to have something less likely to be used on her, like the snubbie.

I was purely speaking from a defensive position. Luckily we dont have kids yet because you raise a very valid point. Truthfully i wouldnt want my wife pulling the trigger if my kid was held hostage at this point she just doesnt have the tools yet. Thanks for pointing out the flip side.

I totally believe that most top tier competitive shooters out shoot many of our elite sf guys. In fact my cousin in marsoc went to a few matches 3 gun and idpa and "didnt even turn heads" (his words). Where the difference between sf operators and leo such as swat is the conditions they train under and experience in their line of work. That is the great equalizer. Most guys would not be quite the expert (not saying you since i have no idea of your background) and crumble when being shot at or in those extreme pressure scenarios. Having an aggressor(s) and possibly taking fire is a game changer. Hell as much we have practiced at the two old cinderblock houses at the ranch setting up popup targets and sweeping tge houses i can only pray the Lord that i wouldnt crack under pressure. By the way my cousin has a bunch of money to set up all kinds of stuff at the ranch he plans on setting up a civilian training deal once he gets out, and have a place to practice when he goes back to contracting. I just lucked out that i have access to him and the place.

To all, thank you for the information and conversation. I took her to the range last weekend and had her shoot around 100 rounds of .22LR and 50 rounds of .22 mag thru my single six. for a first timer she did fairly well. I am probably not the best one to teach her and when we get a bit further on I will probably set her up with an instructor and then find a weapon that she is comfortable with. I have several excellent suggestions on this thread but at the end of the day it will be hers.

As for a shotgun, I have several. When she is a little more seasoned we will graduate to those. Then she can go dove hunting with me.
