Go to the vets office and have the vet come out to the car to put him down.
I'm sorry,,, It gets harder the older we get.

Angie YEP. I had to load Cookie into her dog box. She thought she was on the way to another hunt. I held her while she slipped away and told her that there would be a covey under every bush.

Any vet worth their snuff will come out to your vehicle or to your house and do it for you. I would rather they go to heaven in my arms at the hands of a caring vet than at the end of a gun that I pointed at them. Dogs deserve better than coyotes or pigs or any varmint. I cry over any dog that has been with me for very long. Right now I have tears for your dog. Nothing unmanly about shedding a tear over a dear friend. No dog likes the vet, but humane treatment in this case involves a vet and sitting on the tailgate of my truck holding my dog while he goes to heaven is the way I want it to be. Doing it yourself involves guns and we all know how guns kill and this is not the last picture I want to have of an animal that has shared my life with me for 14 long and loving years. I would wonder about me if I did not shed tears for each and every dog I have owned. Your dog, your gun, your choice, and your memories. Go to the vet. I will pay the vet bill and I will also pay for a new pair of shades that you could pick up before you go to the vet.

I had to put my first dog down last year in November. Like you, I always said I would do it myself out of respect for him but I just couldn't do it. I finally took him to the vet and was able to hold him and talk to him as he passed. Cried, cried, cried.
That being said, if there is any chance at all that you can have a vet do it, please do, its much more peaceful for the dog and they get to pass pleasantly in your presence. I know if I had the opportunity to either die unknowingly, or pleasantly in the presence of those I loved, I would chose the latter.
Sorry to hear about your upcoming loss.

It is extremely sad to have to put a dog down, so to make it easier I think of it like this. The dog I have now is living a very good life. He gets taken care of, gets to run around with people that love him and have fun. When it is time for my dog to go, I will be afforded an opportunity to give another dog a very good life. Not sure if that makes it better, but for me, its a way to cope. Not sure if I will ever be able to not have a dog, they are too loyal and fun.
