I was out at the western side of Sam Houston National Forest Friday and Saturday before the big rains hit. The good news was that I had specifically scouted out high ground and nothing was too swampy; the bad news was that the Forest Service had most of the roads closed due to the previous wet weather, so I had to walk in a mile each way, carrying my rifle, chair blind (rainproof) and pack.

I tried calling for coyotes, with no luck, but a whitetail doe came in and grazed for a few minutes. I also encountered a group of friendly hikers who had wandered off the Lone Star Trail. I bugged out on Saturday afternoon when the thunder & lightning started.

Harrier did they burn on your side.
I was mid/eastern Sam last week and they burned off the under brush.
Between the mud and burn I was looking ugly by the time I got back to my truck.

There was no recent burn where I was, but enough scorched trees from past burns that I got kind of sooty too. I saw hog tracks scattered around. There were mudholes covered with water that had probably been rooted up at one point. I explored around between my high ground and a creek, and that whole area was pretty swampy -- would be great for hogs.
