Anyone use them? Any advantages or disadvantages to having one on a scope? I've had them come with several scopes that I've bought over the years but I've never put one on.

I dont shoot without them. They are actually more than just for looks. They do block the sun, but they also keep water off the lense. I had to shoot 8 hours a day in the rain for a week, the sun shade was invaluable to me that week.

If the scope comes with a shade, I install it and leave it on.

I've shot and spotted eight hours a day several days per month for years, and rely on the shade. Especially when you are pointing toward the sun. And I agree that they help keep water off the lens.

I hate the very thought of sunshades, but there are a few occasions when they are useful. Such as the times mentioned above.

Installed mine from day one and left it on

I don't hunt with a sunshade, ever. I generally don't like my scopes over 12 inches in length anyways. Adding a 4-6 inch sunshade just seems silly. Not having a sunshade on the scope has never cost me a hog. Never once have I said "if only I had a sunshade."

99 percent of my hunting isn't looking through a scope anyways. That's what bino's and spotting scopes are for. The bikini covers only come off when I have decided to take the shot. And the only time I use covers is on rainy/snowy days.

Having said all that, they do come in handy on range days in rare occurrences. But I prefer to train like I hunt, so the shade may only come out of the bag a few times a year.

Where do you get sunshades this long? All of mine are half that length.

The sun shades that come with the Nightforce scopes I normally keep on. When they are off, I do notice more glare on sunny days. And when you do get in rain or some kind of moisture, you will wish you had them. My lenses also stay cleaner with the sun shades on. But, these are my precision rifles, not my hunting rifles. If it's a simple 3-9 scope on my Rem 700 Blk Out, then no, it does not wear a sun shade.

4 inch seems like overkill....but I use the one that came on my new Bushy LRHS. You can't always choose the shot horizon. When your aiming west in the late afternoon, why not take the sun out of the equation? It's not like they weigh much.

That's acceptable however I'm trying to be as tactical as possible. That's why mine is sprayed flat black

Huh, I just leave a few rolls of toilet paper on there to disguise it and help with heat build up

Mine are usually on all the time except for my dedicated hunting rifles although I typically carry my heavy gun these days.

The Meopta that I just got in doesn't have one included but I'm going to buy one for it and give it a try.

ETA:I'm going to see if the one that came with my Swaro fits it!

Swaro was a no go. Skylar hooked me up with one for the Meopta today. Great guy to deal with!
