My .243 savage shot great last deer season. Loved it. A few weeks ago I shot it again and the cases were sticking in the chamber. It was very hard to get them out each time. I cleaned it some and tried an already shot case in it and it was hard to load and then once it was loaded it was hard to get out. Factory loaded ammo loads and unloads fine but once I shoot it, it will stick in it.
I looked inside where the case goes and it doesn't look perfectly smooth. Is that the problem? How do I clean it?

Clean it with a brush that fits snugly and a good solvent. Don't rush. Let the solvent work, even for a few days. Then douche it all out really well and patch it dry.

I would chuck up a brush in a drill and polish it quite a bit.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

I cleaned it a lot today and ran a brush in it. It's much better. I'll clean it and brush it more throughout the week.
Will it keep rusting? Should I keep it lightly oiled every day?
Can I use Hopps #9? Will it work?

Where are you leaving this gun while not in use and for how long?

It's my fault I think. I didn't clean the gun after hunting and I think the last hunt it rained on me.
I'm leaving it in my closet in my house in a safe.
Will Hoppes #9 solvent be better than the lubricating oil for cleaning it?
I got it really good yesterday. Cleaned it and brushed it for a while.
I really don't know how to clean a gun. I know it's dumb but I was never taught how to clean a gun growing up. I don't even think we ever cleaned our guns or oiled them.

May be worth taking it to a gunsmith or something if you don't want to mess with it.
On the other hand, I don't think you could do any harm if you don't use anything too abrasive. A nilon or coper brush of the right size some solvent and elbow grease will probably have it fixed up.
Some of the ammo these days is coated in a varnish to prevent corrosion etc. it has a bad habit of doing what you describe. If that's the case I would clean with a solvent, Hoppes should work and find a different brand of ammo.

I haven't watched the videos above yet but I bet they help a lot. Your question regarding Hopps vs oil, don't think of one OR the other. Think one THEN the other. Hopps will get it clean. Then the light oil if you plan to let it set real long, otherwise I leave mine pretty dry. (But I'm just looking for a reason to re barrel tho)

REDCHEVY got it right, take it to a gunsmith with a bore scope he can see the chamber walls, check for abnormalities. Measure headspace and can probably fix whatever the problem is. If its a manufacturer error, I'm sure Savage will make it right.

Thanks. Those videos were exactly what I needed. It now cycles shells perfectly. Hopefully I can shoot it soon to know if they stick or not.

I shot it this morning and none got stuck. All extracted like normal. Even my hot reloads were good:).
