Thinking about one of these... What do yall think?

I've got an old Walmart package Savage 110 in 30-06 that's like getting kicked by a mule... Grandpa's old Remington 788 .243 that I've used pretty decently.
I just bought my wife a Marlin X7y in .243 that seems really nice for the money, so got me thinking it might be time for something new.
Any thoughts about good "budget" guns appreciated
Thanks!

Stick with the 788! Still have mine from 1979, also a .243.

The Venture is a great gun from what I hear, but I just don't like the way it looks. I found an amazing deal on a Ruger American in 7mm-08 and was in the market for an additional deer rifle so I thought I would give it a shot. With Federal Fusion 120 gr it shot a 3 shot .75" best group @100yds the very first trip to the range. Worst group of the test session (in really crappy weather, and me not working at it too hard) was 1.75" with Remington 140gr Core-lokt. I was working on a really good group with the Fusion at one point, the first two shots were about .3 but some I let a guy with a cannon next to me break my concentration and the third round was about 1.25 from the first two. It's wearing a Leupold VX-1 4-12x40 in Talley mounts (I had to Dremel the rear mount for a little clearance for the mag ring). I would buy it again in a heartbeat although I would consider a Predator model in 6.5 Creedmoor (that green stock, UGH! sick). I always wanted a 7-08, though, and now I've got one and it didn't break the bank.

Savage Axis is hard to beat in the budget gun world. Timney makes a trigger for them around $80 bucks if you want a better trigger.

The Ruger American is a very nice rifle too and they are making them in 6.5 Creedmoor now, they are just impossible to find in that caliber though. They are accurate and good work horses. I have shot one of the original Ruger Americans, I didn't love the trigger and the stock was very cheap but it was an accurate rifle which is all that matters.

If I were in the market for a budget gun I would buy a used Savage, someone just sold a .308 on here for $375 I believe. That is a steal for what you get. You can build off that action and rebarrel to whatever SA caliber you want.

I am told Tikka also makes a great rifle for the price but I have never shot one.

I have a TC Venture in 223 Remington. It works fine and gets the job done. I have not had any issues.
Never owned a Ruger American so I can't comment on that one

The Venture feels like a nicer rifle to me. They both will probably shoot well. Nothing wrong with a $379 Remington 700 ADL from Academy either.

I would strongly consider a Browning A-Bolt with composite stock and blued finish. Maybe about $150 more than what is being mentioned above, but for straight out of the box groups with factory ammo, these are hard to beat. Best trigger you can buy for a factory trigger IME.

I had a Venture in 204 Ruger, I liked the rifle. It would shoot little bitty groups at 100 yards, the action was very smooth, the rifle felt good shouldered and, in your hands. I gave it away in a raffle at a Varmint Calling School. I would buy a Venture.

I have also bought and given away a Ruger American in 243. Honestly I would not but another one it just did not feel right to me and the action was not that smooth. I did not shoot it so cannot report on accuracy. I gave it to an organization and do not know who ended up with it.
