I am still pretty green when it comes to dove hunting, only 2 seasons under my belt.

With all of this rain how will it affect the crops that are harvested that a lot of dove feed on. I saw on the news a lot of farmers in N Tx already had their crops destroyed by flooding

It needs to stop raining so they can plant. A lot of the winter crops are history since no one has been able to get in to cut.

My sunflowers are crazy good this year. I look for it to be a banner year.

so sunflowers should do good but grains will suffer until they can plant....is that the basics?

Depending upon when and if the farmers can get in the field to plant. Milo is fairly quick to grow and produce, some types take less than 90 days to be ready for harvest. If it stops raining in June, many farmers will have time to get their milo planted though harvest may be pushed back to September. That would be good for the hunting.
Winter wheat is going to be a problem getting it harvested due to wet fields. Some farmers may just take the insurance (if they have it) and plow it under in August/September - again, a good deal for the dove hunter.

As Stompy stated, Sunflowers should be thicker than ticks on a hog's belly this year. Find a good field and you just might find a good place to hunt.

It will definitely be a bumper crop for sunflowers and dove weed a/k/a, croton.
I think I saw where Stompy has fields available. You should contact him. The Breckenridge area is top notch for doves. I used to hunt just north of Breckenridge near Crystal Falls and had some of the best hunts ever there.

Ive got a few places i can go right now, just not sure if they will hold birds.

a place in hearne where milo is planted was good last year

new boston, we just hunted a pasture that was decent for a weekend

and 2 places in brock we hunted in the winter season that were pretty good.

I've got a buddy with land in lampasa and they always clean up out there

and now i have the opportunity to go to a place in brownwood with a buddy

I've yet to bag a limit, but its a blast either way for me

Having fun, that's what's important. You can really never depend on doves. We are at the mercy of too many things mother nature has to offer. Easy limit one day, gone the next.

All of the properties we lease out were planted even with the heavy rain. They were planted late but still planted, on the flip side the crops will mature quicker with the abundance of water and cooler weather. Some of the low lying areas, those fields are still holding water and farmer were unable to plant. But for the most part as long as the fields were able to drain they dried out in a day and was able to plant.

If you can find a field of winter wheat that they didnt harvest this spring, that can lead to some outstanding dove hunts this fall. There will be lots of food for them.to choose from.

True, our best season ever was a rainy season that made the farmers skip wheat, harvest corn/milo, then come back to clean up wheat late... tons of grain on the ground.

In fact, I think dove hunting in fields is oppo farming, the best farm years, they harvest on schedule and have great yields so they are careful. The worst farm years they are either off schedule, or crappie yields/in a hurry or both, and that means more spilt/unharvested grain for birds.
