I've had the same old ATV with 4WD for years. It was necessary when I lived back in the world of mud in north eastern Louisiana, but it's been so long since I had serious mud around here (central TX) that I thought I might go for 2WD on the next ATV. Well...that idea is dead and gone. I'm sticking with 4WD. You only need it when you need it, but brother I have needed it. This TX mud is not as thick as what I grew up dealing with, what's referred to as 'Gumbo Mud' back in Louisiana. It'll stick to your boots till each one weighs 50 pounds. This mud just drops off your boots, but I swear I think it's more slippery. I'd have been stuck yesterday if I didn't have high ground clearance and 4WD.

I'm ready for some sunshine. Got 3 inches of rain in an hour today. Geez.

I don't know why everyone thinks it has to be muddy to have a need for 4x4

I use mine 10x more on steep rocky ground than in mud. Also gets used a lot in the sugar sand area south of I-10 and east of 37

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Exactly. I can 'find bottom' with most of our muddy spots. It's the hard climbs and descents we use 4wd for.

Most ATV's will go through quite a bit 2wd, a lot more than a 2wd truck will etc. Like trophy said, I use 4x4 a lot more in sand than I do in mud.

and then there was the fellow on my lease a few years ago who showed up with a golf cart. It worked fine going down my hills. Not very good at going up some of my hills. roflmao

Think the guys called him "Fore".

I use 4wd at least once a week and it's usually all due to sand

I've now had 6 4 wheelers; 2 with 4wd. I've never really needed it. However, my Wife got stuck once while in 4wd. I had just gone through in 2wd with no problems. I guess it would be OK to have but I wouldn't pay extra for it. My land is very rocky, sandy and hilly. Now, it is pretty well washed out.

2 had winches that I only used to stretch fence wire.

I have used a 2wd timber wolf for years and never had a problem.

2WD here since '05, no issues. I go everywhere on our place the 4WD's go. We have lots of rocks, hills, big creek, etc.

2WD is about as useful as teets on a boar.

just really depends what your planning on going though.. if you cant get a 2wd 4wheeler through most settings your driving it wrong... the biggest advantage to 4wd is 30% more push and pull..

one advantage I noticed is climbing up a loose rock road 4wd seems to be the safer way compared to 2wd both make it but have to use more power on the 2wd throwing rocks and slipping sideways.
