I had one walking by last night on my first night hunt. He left a pond right after sunset, and was headed to some cantaloupes that had been dumped in the field that were 5-600 yds away. I was trying to figure out why my illuminator wasn't lighting him up properly. I actually thought it wasn't aligned with the rifle, but later found out it wasn't focused properly and was "flooded" more than needed.
I tried for a neck shot, while he was walking, but was trying to figure out what noise or sound I could try to make without spooking him, that might get him to stop for a second or two.
What have you tried???

Glenn Guess does a good job with actually calling hogs. Depending on the hog's activities, a whistle, bark, or snort may very well get a brief stop for a shot, but the hog will soon continue. It should not be a loud, sudden sound or that may spook it.

Agree with DNS.
I use a soft 'whistle' to get their attention. Same thing I do with Deer, Coyotes and Bobcats, (with pretty much the same results). They either stop (briefly) to locate/identify the source....or they boogie on out of there. Depends very much on circumstance and the animal....but worth a try. As concerns hogs...I would never let one just walk away.

It's probably no more or less effective than a whistle or anything else, but I had a guide tell me years ago to blow them a kiss...not too loud or too long, just loud enough so they can hear & only do it for an instant.
I've remembered to try it a few times. Had one lone boar that was already on high alert blow out when I did it, but the other 5-6 times I've tried it, it stops them just long enough to get a shot off.

I've never had to stop one before, so I'd be interested in what others have to say. My experience is usually hogs stop frequently and seem to check the area out. I've always been amazed at how long they seem to stand motionless. I keep a Primos game call to stop coyotes, so I might try the call if the opportunity ever presents itself.

Used to use a short quiet whistle. Now with a few false teeth, I can't whistle so I give them a quick kiss. If they are going to stop, they will for a second but some just run....by then I usually already have them in the sights if they do run.

My pig stopper. Fonzie, thanks for the laugh. Yes, 30-40 years ago that was my pig stopper as well. Nothing gets the blood running like a good bull dog, a bad hog, and a knife, and no tree within 100 yds. We didn't have cut vest, or collars back then, or snake boots. Seen a lot of good dogs cut down, and a few people put up trees.

I make a clicking sound with my mouth. Sometimes that's not loud enough. A short "Hey" at them other times. But not so loud as to scare them enough to immediately start running.

I know if one is right on top of you, don't do a mouth grunt like you would with a deer. They will not stop and go from a slow walk to a get down get out boogie!!!

Pigs, especially older pigs, are harder to stop than deer. I used to whistle at pigs, sometimes it works sometimes it don't. Obviously you have to think about how much noise is being caused by the wind already etc & where you are located to him, that will determine how loud to whistle. Sometimes while watching a big boar with NV running across a field about to cross a road where I wanted him to stop for the shot (to make loading easier) I would just grunt at him. Besides all of that....for some reason years ago I tried something different with deer and pigs both. I have what I call the Mexican Peacock call It is loud, and sounds like a peacock and a drunk Mexican yell combined. I've been using it for years and it has stopped every single pig or deer I have used it on. Sounds crazy, but it dang sure works. all BS aside. When I use it I see nothing but ears and haven't spooked one yet.

Never tried. I hunt in the piney woods so they are always on top of us. By the time we see them.

use a grunt like a pig would. its worked many times, they seem to stop and listen where the others are at.
