I saw our first fawn of the season tonight. Looked like it was a day or two old, tottering behind its mama. I plan to head into the woods this weekend to see if I can remove a coyote or two, making it easier on the little guys.

Neighbor text me this photo 2 days ago, this little guy was bedded between our houses some what. 1st one I have seen this year, but I have avoided the woods somewhat to let them remain quite (small acreage).

Should be a lot of fawns on the ground in some areas. The Hill Country has a bit earlier rut than a lot areas to South or West. I know the SE coast area and areas in Kendall County all would have fawns on the ground in late April to now.

I saw our first fawn in Mason County on May 29 last year. Most were born in Jun/July.
I should be seeing them anytime.

Question: Does getting that close to them for a pic scare off the mothers?

The does stash the fawns in tall grass or under a tree to go off and feed, and then they come back about once an hour to nurse the fawn. Sometimes they keep a pretty good eye on the baby and sometimes not. We're in a neighborhood so the deer are pretty acclimated to human activity.

At our house in East Texas, we have 12+ acres with a field behind the house and next door my brother-in-law has about the same acreage with a deer feeder set up. This time of the year it is common for up to a half dozen does to bed the fawns down within 50 yards of the back of my house and swimming pool and leave them. No one messes with the deer on my or my brother-in-laws place and I suppose they feel it is safe to leave them there.

Have seen 4 fawns so far this year and finally caught one on the game camera. If you look in the background you can see me mowing the fields
