Texas House of Representatives Set to Consider Right to Hunt & Fish Constitutional Amendment

Today, likely before noon, the Texas House of Representatives will consider Texas Senate Joint Resolution 22, sponsored by state Representative Trent Ashby (R-Lufkin) and state Senator Brandon Creighton (R-Conroe). Safari Club International (SCI) is urging all of our members to contact their state Representative to ask them to support SJR 22.

SJR 22 proposes an amendment to the Texas Constitution that establishes “an individual right to hunt, fish and harvest wildlife, including by the use of traditional methods, subject to laws or regulations to conserve and manage wildlife and preserve the future of hunting and fishing.” In addition, this amendment would make “hunting and fishing the preferred methods of managing and controlling wildlife.” SJR 22 would help protect Texas' hunting heritage for generations to come against attacks from well-funded, anti-hunting organizations.

Not only are hunting and fishing deeply-rooted in Texas culture, they have a major economic impact on the state. Currently, sportsmen and women in Texas spend $4.1 billion annually and support 65,993 jobs.

Please email or call your state Representative before noon today, May 20, and urge him or her to vote to support SJR 22 on the House floor.

While your attention is drawn to the intent of this bill to protect fishing, hunting, and outdoors rights, you had better also look at selling and privatization of our public, state, and federal lands.
