What is the best 12 Gauge auto for teenage boys to hunt turkeys without spending a ton of money? We borrowed a 12 gauge browning 3-1/2" chamber this year but would like to get our own gun.

Probably a mossberg chambered in 3.5 inch. I don't see the need in spending a fortune on a fancier shotgun to hunt turkey. I use a hand me down remington 870. The birds don't care if it isn't as sexy as some other offerings.

I shoot the Mossberg 935 synthetic 3 1/2" semi for turkey and I am very seriously considering shooting my Charles Daly 20 ga. 3" semi. The weight is a lot less, the recoil is greatly reduced and the ammo is cheaper. I have begun to experiment with different chokes and loads to pattern for turkey. The range with the 20 is not much less than the 12, if any. Just my 2 cents for what it is worth.

For a kid, I would skip the 3 1/2 inch. I personally shoot 3 inch. If you call them in close, that is all you need. Any of the B guns has a base model (I shoot a Beretta 3901) for a less than 800 in 3 inch. Turkey to me is not as critical as waterfowl, so you can get a wood stock (may get scratched and put camo tape on it.

Agreed, I personally have a remington 870 super mag and I shoot 3.5" shells through it and if your teenager can handle it then by all means go big. You should be just fine with a remington 870 express and 3" winchester #5's. Once I see one get up and run off after being smacked with that thing then I will explore other options. In 26 years I haven't seen it yet.

Any of the mentioned shotguns will work fine but I would get the 3.5 in chambered gun and shoot the 3 in shells in it until the boys are able to handle more recoil, like most teenage boys once they find out it can shoot a bigger shell there going to want to shoot it.

You can kill a cow with 20 ga bird shot at 15 yards, I would imagine anything you choose that can get the pattern on a bird's head will do the job.

Wal speaks the truth. The largest turkey I've ever been involved with shooting was shot by my son when he was 6 with a single shot .410. He shot one or two toms a year from the age of 7 to 15 years old with a Mossberg 500 youth 20 ga.

You can get a savage (Stevens) 320 pump for about $250. It handles up to 3" shells. Nothing is going to kill them any deader than this gun. Might not look as cool doing it, but that is for another discussion.

What is your budget?
You really don't need 3.5" shells unless you just want to shoot that size. They are not worth the pain in my opinion. A good choke/shell combination and knowing pattern it shoots is more important.
