One time I was squatting down under this hickory tree in the woods, picking up hickory nuts. I looked over and a copperhead was about two feet from my leg, just coiled up minding his own business. He was almost the same color as the leaves and pine needles, and blended in quite nicely. Good thing I didn't pick him up instead of a hickory nut. He didn't move, so I watched him for a bit, then slooowwly backed away. By the time I got my camera and came back for a photo, he was gone.
Lesson learned: Look carefully before you place your hands around on the ground.
