Ok, this is one I've been working on for nearly 9 months. Interarms Mk X long action (originally a 30-06)that has been trued, lapped and whatever else was needed. Pac-nor 22" barrel. Cerakoted by the folks at Abilene Powder Coating (I heartily endorse them both for the job they did and the fact that they kept me updated on status throughout). Timney Trigger. Colors were my choice.

Caliber is 358 Winchester. Scope is an older Leica (Leica-pold?) 1.75-6x32 w/ a #4 crosshair.

I have 64 rounds loaded up for it and a buddy is giving me 2 more boxes of factory Hornady he found on sale. Now if I can just find the time to go out to the range!

That's unique, for sure. Kinda reminds me of a John Deere tractor, only subdued. I like that you've used a 98-based action too. Your cartridge choice is definitely different too! I gotta wonder why you didn't go ahead and go with .35 Whelen since the action is just right, but the .358 should be just about as effective.

Timney?

Nice boomstick. I had a BLR in 358 Win, it was a fun caliber.

That's a beautiful rifle. Great chambering, too. It's got to be a lot of fun to shoot.

Kind regards, charlesb

I have enjoyed the big bore stuff lately. In the last year I have owned a 330 Dakota, 416 rigby and 338 lapua. Shootin the big bores is a lot of fun.

I once drank muddy water out of a hoof print and was dang glad to get it.

Nice work.

That is an excellent choice for my neck of the woods and lots of guys use this caliber for deer, bear and moose. Great choice for big woods hunting where 90% of big game shots are inside 100 yards and never go more than 200 yards.

I currently shoot a 35 Whelen with 250 grain partitions for my big woods hunting and it will knock down anything that crosses my path.

Bbear I sure hope you did some reading and research on the 358 Winchester cartridge as there is a bunch of great information along with a good amount of BS like back in the day some said it was a brush cartridge lol.

I could go on a long rant about how great the .358 Winchester cartridge really is. Like for instance brass. If you can not find 358 Winchester brass you can use 308 Winchester brass or any number of cartridges in that family. Another is bullet selection. Since it is 358 then you can choose probably any bullet from pistol up through heavy rifle bullets from 110Gr up to 300Gr in both jacketed and cast or home cast.

So do not let people fool you. Depending on your load and bullet selection it can be a wonderful 300-350 yard hunting cartridge.

But to be honest I would not hunt Big Bears such as the Brown Bear. Will it work well I am sure it would but would it work in the time it takes the Bear to get to you first lol. But from all of the reading I have done it is a great cartridge for Elk,Moose and Black Bear on down.

I have a custom built 35 Whelen AI and it is a wonderful round but to be honest for what I hunt of which is Deer and Hog it is a bit much lol.

The 358 Winchester is just right. Again depending on load and bullet choice they are really only about 200 FPS behind the 35 Whelen. And the 358 Winchester can be built on a smaller and lighter platform.

If you are into casting your own I would hurry and take a serous look at this bullet Mould from NOE http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,802.msg7032.html#msg7032

If by chance you should have any questions about the 358 Winchester feel free to give me a shout and I will help all I can. Another web site that is mainly for cast bullets is http://castboolits.gunloads.com/index.php There are lots and lots of threads on the wonderful 358 Winchester. smile

I know I just keep going but if you are going to make your own home cast bullets I would size them at 360 but you may get away with 359 as for bullet lube I tend to like BAC Lube from White Label Lubes and they are great people to work with. I will also note that there is no need for an expensive neck expanding flair die as you can use a .38Sp/.357 Mag neck expanding die. smile

I have a Sako 579 action barreled in 358 Winchester. Love it. You picked as great round with a lot of versatility. It's also nice to have something different and unique. Have a blast with it.

I consider my .416 Rem Mag a "big bore" though I know in the dark continent, its 45 and up. In reality, the recoil is not that bad for a "medium bore", but certainly not as pleasant as my 375 H&H.

Nice rifle, interesting caliber.

I have a friend that has a .358. Way back in the 80's ammo for it was over a buck a round. Do they still make factory ammo for it? How much is 20 rounds now?

I have no clue if one can even purchase .358 Winchester in the south. But it can be ordered through places such as Midway. But this is just one more good reason to roll your own. smile

Finally got some range time with it. A friend picked up 2 boxes of Hornady 200 gr ammo and after doing a box for break-in and sight-in I shot this group.

Time was cut short due to the thunderstorm rolling in. frown Hoping to get out this weekend. I have already loaded about 60 rounds of 200, 225 and 250 with a few different powders just to see what it will do.

Recoil has been quite pleasant. Less than the 30-06 and a bit more than my 25-06's are.

I chose this cartridge over the other 35's simply due to the fact that it is a rather unique 'old' cartridge that will do what I want it to do - take any deer-like game animal out to 300-350 yards. Due to shoulder injury, I sold my 300 win mag and this is one of the 'replacement' rifles I'll have for it. Giving up 200 fps from the 35 Whelan family is no big deal, plus, not everyone has a 358 Win. It's something 'different'.
As for finding ammo, Here in San Angelo both the stores have it on their shelves, not in huge quantities, but enough that if I run out of reloads I can pick up a box.
I have more than 200 pieces of 308 brass that I can easily run through the sizer and make it into 358 so I doubt I'll run out of brass anytime soon.

I'm wanting to try some of the 180 grain pistol bullets in this just for gits and shiggles too. laugh

I love my 358. I reload for it and also have a couple of boxes of win silver tips. I mostly shoot my reloads. I also use 308 brass and 358 bras when I can get it. It's a great caliber and it's something that no else has.

Down South not many have and or use the .358 Winchester but as you move up north with larger game such as Bears,Elk and Moose you will find many more hunters using the .358 Winchester.

It is too bad really as people do not really know of the really fine calibers of years past due to all of the whiz bang new calibers that they push on the public that will do no more than the old calibers and many times less. Especially when you have some so called magazine writers that called the .358 Winchester a brush cartridge. I have no idea what they were smoking to make those claims to kill the .358 Winchester other than to make room for again the new whiz bang stuff.

Hers is just one example of a cartridge that is near the .358 Winchester and even compared to is the .338 Federal of which is still a .308 Winchester case. The .338 Federal may look far better than the .358 Winchester but in reality of hunting I really feel it is no better of a cartridge and definitely not as versatile as the lowly 358 Winchester.
