I went through the same thing with my son. He loved my Marlin 336 in 30-30 circa 1971. When I asked him what deer rifle he wanted, he said a Marlin 336 in 30-30. With my BILls help we located a JM stamped 330 circa 1971 with the blue in almost perfectcondition. The wood needed help but he loves that rifle. I put a recoil pad on it because my son is 14 and 6'4" and needs the extra length.

Sorry for the double post. I also have a BLR in 243 that my daughter uses. It is an Belgium made circa 1971. The magazines for that rifle are out of sight as far as price. I'm very careful with the one mg i have.

I ended up with my Grandpa's 1967 Marlin 336. It is in beautiful condition and the last trip to the range it put 3 out of 5 shots inside a 1" bull at 100 yds with the old tasco 4x scope on top of see through rings. I have othe rifles but enjoy that one the most. I'd like to get another that I can use without worrying about damaging an heirloom.

For a 30-30, I'd get a Walmart Marlin, then send it to a smith who does "cowboy" guns to be slicked up.
Best gun for the bucks, so to speak.
Kind regards, charlesb

Question. Why get a lever action when you could get a bolt action? You get better cartridges and I bet you van work a bolt pretty quick with practice.

At 100 yard hunting distance, the 30-30 with a 170 grain bullet is just about perfect. Recoil is low, ammo is cheaper. I might use a peep sight or maybe a scout scope on one, but mounting a scope in the 'standard' position ruins the handling qualities, the gun's best feature. If you've owned a 30-30 lever gun, you'd know precisely what I am talking about. It's one of those 'proper tool for the job at hand' deals... For whitetails at 100 yards or less, a good lever gun is awfully hard to beat. I'm a real nut about bolt actions, by the way, I love them. - For larger animals or longer ranges.
Kind regards, charlesb

I am leaning towards a new Henry 30-30. He just got the Henry .22 lever action and loves it! I like the Browning BLR and Winchester 94 as well.
But, are the Marlin 336 30-30's at Walmart junk. Being only $367.00, they obviously they are not as good as Henry, Browning, etc.
What pros and cons do Yall know about them? Thx! I had an 1895 in 45-70 that wouldn't chamber shells because the chamber was reamed too short. I handled a 336 that did not feed shells smoothly at all, and had a horrendous trigger. I had a JM 336 that was a good rifle.

Here's another BLR Gun Broker deal worth looking at IMO.
Check out auction # 482323429.
This'un is going to sell today. Right now the bid is $475, with NO RESERVE, but has 15 bidders. The gun is a newer pistol grip LightWeight 243 in great shape...and won't stay at the $475 price when the Auction ends this afternoon. Ron

When I was a teenager, I saved up and bought my first rifle, a Marlin 1895G. - I learned a lot with that rifle, and it did a good job.
Kind regards, charlesb

When lever actions are mentioned, 2 guns come to mind. Rem 94 and marlin 336. I choose marlin for the ease of adding a scope.
I will get off in a little bit

Well, unless I talk myself out if it...I'm going to go ahead and go with a new Henry 30-30 with the blued barrel.
I love some of the other guns mentioned, but really like the new Henry's...especially since he has the "little brother" to it already...the Henry .22 rifle. Still would love to get a Winchester 94 and Marlin 336 for myself one day though.
Thanks for everyone's help!
