Any recommendations for pointer training for my 7 month old Vizsla? I would prefer something close to Houston, but from my search it seems I may have to go up towards Dallas. Thanks in Advance.

Has anyone heard of/used Big Country Kennels out of Albany, TX?

Rob Martin in east Texas trains a lot of NSTRA pointing dogs. He has a good reputation.

I don't believe at all that a trainer for vislas is different than all the other pointing breeds.

USMC, Rob has a puppy program that introduces young dogs to birds and gun fire, you might see if he has room in that. My setter Jack is going for that in June

I hunted years ago with a man from Midland that had his dogs trained there in Albany and boarded them there all year. They were a great pair of dogs that worked well for him with the electric collar. They were well trAined and worked good although the owner had nothing to do with them outside of hunting season.

I sent ruby my (vizsla) to Buck Henderson at Backyard Kennels in Van Alstyne and couldn't be happier with the results. I put her in the puppy training he offers its a 30 day program. She was a little young but I had been really working with her and he did the initial consult to she if she was ready to have formal training. She did really good and was very eager to get after the birds he had introduced her to. This was the first time she had seen a live bird. He said he normally he doesn't want pups this young but she showed to have good drive.

So I dropped her off and was a little leery of what he was claiming he would have her doing after just 30 days. I felt like I had a good foundation with come, kennel, and fetch for a 5 month old pup (very hit or miss). She was already retrieving pretty naturally without any real pressure. But he told me he would have her able to heel, load, kennel,find birds, hold, collared condition, gun broke, birds shot over her and retrieving all within 30 days.

Now this is my first hunting dog so I have no experience with dog training but this sounded like a lot of bang for my buck in a short period of time. He offers a 3 month training program in the future if I feel the need to. I had researched Buck on other forums and all were really good reviews. What I liked the best was that he only had 8 dogs max at a time, so she would be given the attention she deserved. And the fact that she would be exposed to birds every day.

Well I got updates every monday and he updated me on how she was progressing and what they would be working on during the upcoming week. After 30 days I went to pick her up and was told to be ready to spend a few hours so that I could work with her and Buck would train me on how to handle her in the field. Right of the bat Buck showed me everything she had learned which included whoa training which was not part of the training agreement but he said she was moving along really well. He went out and planted several birds throughout his place. She pointed and held point on every bird and we fired shots and watched her retrieve.

I could not be any happier with her progress. Anyone that has a bird dog or a versatile dog breed looking for a trainer I highly recommend Buck. He is a very nice down to earth guy that will shoot you straight. He also trains, judges and participates in NAVDA and AKC trials.

First post here, I have no idea what I am doing with my Vizsla , I'm not even a hunter.... until now.

However, a good friend recommended Buck and my 4 month old pup will be going to see him late Summer/ Early Fall for the puppy program. Buck is really involved with NAVHDA, and specializes in versatile breeds. Not to mention Buck called me and answered all my questions including when I should bring Cruiser to him. With Vizsla's Buck feels like they do better a little older, but every dog is different. Because of that I'll be taking him to the kennel at the 6 month mark to see if he's ready or we need to wait.

Guess I need to go buy a gun now....

I caught my dog, that I had always wanted for a running partner pointing in the backyard and now I'm diving headlong into all this. I just really want to do right by him, he's born to hunt and I dont feel its right to not let him.

I don't think so, looks like they both come from "Am DC Rebel Rouser E T HOF" , if I am looking at the right Haulin.

I just got my completed NAVHDA registration certificate in the mail yesterday. They were able to gather enough from their DB and the Vizsla DB to verfiy DNA (i guess that is what they were doing).

I just thought he might have been out of Cruzin (FC Bravo Haulin's Olympic Spirit) because you named him Cruiser. Cruzin is a son of Haulin (NFC NVA-NCH DC Onpoint’s Bravo Thunder Rolls.
