New to hog hunting, and could use a bullet recommendation. I'll be shooting a .308. What are you pros using? The fancy/expensive super-expanding rounds with the polymer tips, soft points (Core-Lokt), or something else? Remington makes a hog specific hunting round and it looks like a match/paper punching bullet. I'm beginning to think that what works best on white-tails isn't necessarily what I should be using on hogs. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

What round do you currently shoot?
Any soft point or ballistic tip from 150-165 should be just fine. I would completely avoid FMJ and the 175 gr Target rounds. Really the key is shot placement on hogs. Shoot them between the ear and the eye and they will be DRT. If you need a good aiming point use the ear. If you have to take a heart lung shot; aim for the arm pit on the opposite side, the heart is lower on a hog than a deer. Also the hydro static shock to a hog is not near the effect you get on a deer. Hogs necks are short and do not seem to break as easy as a deer's with a high shoulder shot. You rely on critical tissue damage much more than bone damage.

I use 168 Grain Amax (you'll hear this isn't a hunting round) but it works great. Hornady SST, Hornady Whitetail Revolutuon, federal soft point, core lokt, Winchester ballistic tip/silver tip all work just fine. Figure out your price point, and then determine which one shoots the best from your gun. Anything from 147 to 180 grain bullet weight will get the job done with proper bullet placement. I'm of the opinion you don't need to spend $1.75 per round for a good hog bullet.

I spent close to $1.75/round on 160 rounds of Hornady 165 Gr SST and Federal 180 Gr Vital Shok. Went through a couple boxes of each sighting in my new rifle. I learned my rifle/scope combo is fantastic accurate, but at 100 yards, I need a lot more practice. $1.75/round to practice is too much.

Shoot what you got, simple. Hit a hog in the ear and its on its side. Even a varmit bullit in .308 put in the chest will do the job. GO CHEAP!

One argument for the 180 grain bullet, or maybe a premium bullet, is that it's possible, on many occasions, to go for a two'fer on smaller hogs when the line up. As far as shot placement goes, draw a line between the eyes and the point of the shoulder. A bullet anywhere on that line should drop your hog. The biggest mistake that rifle shooters make when hunting hogs is to shoot behind the shoulder. If you insist on shooting behind the shoulder, then hold as close to the edge of the shoulder as possible; and low.

I shoot .308 on hogs. I use Hornady Interlocks — a basic cup and core bullet similar to a Core-Lokt or a Winchester Power Point. They work fine. In my bolt action rifle I use a 150 grain bullet, in my AR-10 (which I use at night) I shoot 180 grains. The reason for the larger bullet in the AR-10 is what syncerus says: sometimes (rarely, it seems) there's an opportunity for a double and at night my shooting distances are shorter so I don't worry about bullet drop at long range.
I have two unwritten rules: 1. 2.

I have seen tons of hogs fall to a 150 Core Lokt from a 308. I wouldn't say its the best medicine for them simply because I have seen quite a few of them not exit and with a hog a exit wound is a big deal for me because its hard to get them to bleed a lot without one.
My top bullet choices would be a Partition, Accubond, Scirroco, Fail Safe, and just about any of their copy cats.

I hunt .308. I'm finishing off some Monarch 150gr softpoints. Not exactly expensive high-end stuff. Been doing heart shots but going to try neck shooting. Not many of mine run away but I'm hitting them at 40yards and under in the brush.

Keep shots ta short distance, not alot of knock down power, small entry wound, so not best blood trail... Shoulders cant take the pounding of my .270, been working on me fun-de-mentals of choot-en first time shot a .06 with scope was an eye opener... Best wishes

My most common .308 hand load is with 150 gr. Sierra Spitzers. I have shot a few hogs with this load and they have all been DRT. A well placed shot is imperative for a clean kill whatever caliber you choose to shoot. I normally use one of my 6.8 spc AR's if I am specifically going for hogs but will use whatever I happen to be carrying if the shot presents itself. I was calling coyotes a couple of years ago when this boar came to investigate. I put a 39 grain Sierra Blitking out of my .204 Ruger in his right ear at 156 yds. and he fell straight over and never kicked. I did not go hog hunting with a .204 Ruger and would not recommend it, but if you know your rifle and your abilities, you will do OK.

I shoot a .308 and my go-to ammo on pigs is 150gr Core-lokt. Favorite shot is the ear hole, but one right at the crease of the front leg has never failed to drop one. If he's quartering away aim a couple inches back. Pigs are tough, but they're far from bulletproof.

Aim between the shoulder and the nose. Any "deer rifle" bullet will put them down because you are going to get a central nervous system hit. I shoot the slow, under powered, much maligned 300 Blackout and every pig I hit between the shoulder and nose falls over dead.

Even more with .22 Magnum. You'd be surprised.

I use a .308 with 165gr sierra sgk hollow points. Even if the hit is too far behind the shoulder, they don't go far. Doesn't really take that much of bullet, some folks shoot'em with .22 LR when in range. Good luck, kill a bunch.

.308 is a good size bullet. any standard loading will work fine on hogs. anything you'd shoot deer with will do the same on a hog.
.308 is commonly loaded at 150grn or better. any bullet in that loading will be good. soft point, polymer point, won't matter. as long as your gun is on and the hit is good....pig will die.
