I am planning to turkey hunt Saturday but there is a 50-80% chance of rain and a 10-20 mph wind forecast. I have been after one particular gobbler for the last 2 years. I finally got a good look at him this past Saturday and he is a mature bird with a long beard but I couldn't coax him across a fence to where I was hunting. I guess my question is, do I have a chance at getting a bird at all with that forecast? I can only hunt this Saturday and then Sunday of the next week because of prior commitments. Any suggestions would be welcome. I don't think I had the right setup Saturday, I had out 3 hens and a Jake and feel that I should have only had the hens. I had this bird at about 25 yards but I refuse to break the law and shoot across the fence. I'm hunting public and have encountered this bird several times over the last 2 seasons but he if very smart and hasn't lived this long by being stupid. Once again I am open to any help on how to harvest this bird. Thanks in advance.

NOT going is a guaranteed big ZERO chance! Sorry, no other solutions to offer.

That's what I always say, you can't get one if you are sitting at home.

rain = pop-up blind. As soon as that rain ends, turkeys will be on the move.

Turkeys are out there anyway. My son got one back in March during a downpour.....and we saw 12-15 birds that morning in sporadic rain showers. The wind would bother me more than the rain, but not going is the only way to guarantee an outcome. Even with big wind forecasts, very early it may be light enough to at least get on one.

My big thing is, what kind of magic trick do I pull off to get this cagey old bird to commit suicide and cross off of private land onto public? The bird has laughed at me several times while hunting this area. I have had him at the fence twice, in the open meadow twice and in the woods one. I could have shot him last week but I would have been a law breaking dog and that is not my style.

I'm far from an expert, but I'd probably try to get him in the woods and away from any wide open areas where he can see a hen before committing. Maybe skip the decoys this time around.

I have to draw him off private land across the open into the woods on public first. That fence line is his stopping point. I plan to move over into the woods on the public so that if I do get him there he will be within gun range. It took me about a hour and ten minutes to coax him out last Saturday. I have learned that this bird only appears mid day, I have never called him in early or late.

I'm going in the morning, rain or shine. My day to hunt are down to 2 and I stand at zero birds for me so far and I gotta go. Hopefully I can get on one in a slack time during the rain.

If it rains and is windy, turkey will still follow their normal patterns although will tend to be low rather then high and seek fields out of the wind. I would use s strutting jake decoy and submissive hen and set it up so he can see if from the fence. That may be enough to entice him to cross the fence.

Turkeys will head for the open fields after heavy rain. Get in pop up and wait in the fields they frequent.

Good luck

I hunted Saturday with no luck but I did have one gobblers slip by me in the rain. There was 4 different Toms on the property across the road from where I was hunting that I saw and don't know if they would ever cross the road or not. I guess I just suck at hunting turkey on these public lands. I will be doing a lot more scouting next early spring to try and find some roosting areas but I do feel that most if not all of the birds are roosting on private land. I am new to spring turkey hunting as it is only my second season of doing it and only have one jake to my credit that I called in for my BIL(lucky turd)and I have not taken a bird. I am addicted to the spring hunting but also have a love, hate thing going for it. Lol. Maybe one day I will get one and I will just keep trying until I do. I have one more day to hunt but long range weather forecast calls for 80% chance of rain on the last day of season, maybe that will change.

I usually don't stop hunting the birds until around 5 or so hoping to maybe catch one headed back towards the roost. I just don't seem to be where they prefer to hang out during the day, what birds I encounter seem to be just passing through. I did have a watering pattern kinda figured out until it has rained every week for the last 2 months and now they can get what just about anywhere. It ain't over until sunset next Sunday so back to the woods I go for one more attempt.
