Long time lurker, first time poster.

Gearing up for pig hunting this summer on the lease.

Thinking about how the heat that's coming and how to keep the old plywood stand (at 10 feet in the air and very far from power) cooler in the early evening this summer. Knowing that if there's a solution, you all would have it.

I've seen all the YouTube "air coolers" that run off batteries, and they seem pretty good. But I'm wondering if there's a better solution that you folks know about.

I'd like to hear if anyone has used "quiet" generators at the stand or other creative solutions that really help keep the blind cooler in the late afternoon.

Much obliged for input, comments and thoughts.

Thanks stxranchman.

Does it really make that big of a difference? Respecting your handle, I believe you know what you're talking about, but I can't imagine a cooler of ice with a fan (like I've seen on the YouTube) to really move the needle!

Proof is in the pudding. Thanks for your reply.

GoCool

I have one of these, they are nice for setting in a blind watching for hogs at a watering hole. I have solar in my blinds with car chargers for recharging cell phones. They last about 4-5 hours max but that is normally long enough. Instead of ice I use the cool packs that are used to ship medicine. They last longer and there is no mess.

Use a 12vdc computer muffin fan, quiet and efficient.

A fan passing over a block of ice will do wonders. I actually use block ice to give the AC a head start in our cabin when we first roll up in the summers. When that little cabin is 90+ degrees the block ice sure helps it cool down faster.

For anyone who's curious, I did the math, and it has the effect of a bout a 0.5 BTU air conditioner. Keep your ice in a sealed container, and you won't have the increased humidity either.

Use one gallon screw top water jugs. Leave it in the bucket when you leave. Bring a fresh frozen one with you the next time and you'll have a nice cool jug of water waiting for you. Repeat.

When I started tinkering with a scent controlled blind, I was surprised how much air movement the 25' of 6" vent pipe sticking up in the air created. The draft up that pipe creates an amazing air exchange in the blind (too much in cold weather).

While sitting there in the cold, I got to thinking about the upcoming summer...The draft definitely seems strong enough to pull air through a small evaporative pad placed across the lower inlet vent. I'm going to build a small metal frame for a pad and set up a drip tube, from a gallon jug. I'm not able to hunt over the next three or four weekends, but I'll give this setup a try sometime in May to see if evaporative cooling, without a fan, can make a difference. I'm a little worried that the cooler, moisture laden air may not draft as well. I also have a 12 volt computer fan I bought when starting the original build. I found that I really did not need it to vent heater fumes, and in the woods, that "quite" fan sounded like a screaming turbine...I can use this as a backup, if the passive draft is not enough.

Of course, none of this will help if the humidity is high.

Hmmm. Now you have me thinking. The heat has always discouraged me from summertime hog hunting. I'm going to have to build me one of these.

Funny seeing this thread today. Need to do some pest control in a few weeks - was going to pick up a cheep a/c and run a long extension cord grin. Guess plugging in the spare freezer and making 80lbs of block ice is probably cheaper.

I saw the mention of using an insulated bucket - that should cut down on condensation - but then again putting it in a tub to catch the condensation would work well too - plus if I just freeze the 5 gallon bucket of water - I can just blow a fan on it (put the lid on after it is frozen will also kill the humidly issue.

One more experiment to try - AC by homer.
