We called it a grub or grubbing hoe. We used it along with a pick axe to clean fence lines.

A cotton hoe look like this.

Two types of cotton hoes used in Missouri according to this article

We called the mattock, a grubing hoe down in South Texas. Regional differences I guess.

Yes with the answer cotton hoe, that's what my granny called it. But a bunch of guys called it an eye hoe ( because of the big eye the handle goes thru)I just know that with that heavy head it don't take much to go thru a good size sunflower.

Eye Hoe is what came up on searchs for those pics. We used them for Sunflowers, Bitter Weed and Careless Weeds when chopping cotton or corn.

Always heard it a grubbing hoe. Grandad made them for his farm, but angled the shaft downward as he said it was easier to hoe the row. Have to agree, still have that old tool and use it in the garden.

Yep, it's a eye hoe. Carried one around a lot chopping cotton and maize when I was younger.
