There are plans to bring breeding groups of rhinos to Texas in the not to distant future. Project 1000 is what they are calling it.

The first group scheduled for here will be in Central Texas on a pretty good sized ranch. From what I have heard the habitat in many areas of Texas is not much different that where they will come from.

Sad story. I know Fossil Rim in Glen Rose had a lot of Rhino's when I took the grandchildren last summer.

How weird would that be to one morning have a Rhino at your feeder.

How many are left?

I read somewhere that there was only one breeding age male left in the world and that he was under 24/7 armed guard.

We just had a thread on this. There are about 10,000 male white rhinos. The WWF types have separated the northern white rhino from the southern white rhino to mislead people.

However the population of Africa is supposed to increase 4-fold in the next 85 years and that is going to threaten all wildlife. Bringing rhinos to Texas is a good idea. I think Australia could also take some and they would thrive there.

Im pretty sure the black rhino is more endangered than the white rhino. The hunt dsc sold was for a black rhino.

Yes, but there are over 5000 black rhinos. What is odd is that no one talks about the extremely endangered nature of two Asian rhino species:

Sumatran Rhino < 100

Javan Rhino approximately 45

Instead of having armed guards standing around they should sell "Poacher Hunts" over there and that would take this to a whole new level.
